ObituariesCelia SmithCelia "Noni" Smith of Phoenix died Aug. 24, 2003. She was 100. She was born in New York City and moved to Arizona in 1936 from New Jersey. She was a homemaker and a published poet.Survivors include her daughter, Frances Cohen of Phoenix; son, Jack Smith of El Paso, Texas; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Services were held at Sinai Mortuary Chapel. Burial was at Evergreen Cemetery in Tucson. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary. She was born in May-wood, Ill., and moved to Arizona in 1981. She was a retired secretary for a wholesale import business. She was a volunteer for Kivel and Brandeis Un-iversity.Survivors include her husband, Andrew of Phoenix; son, Len Winkler of Phoenix; sister, Rita Steinback of Boca Raton, Fla.; and two grand-children. Vichea MagierVichea Magier of Phoenix died Aug. 26, 2003. She was 77. She was born in Romania and moved to Arizona in 2001 from Florida. She was a homemaker. She was a survivor of the Holocaust.Survivors include her husband, Jakob of Phoenix; daughters, Yetta Latfas and Ester Magier, both of Gilbert; son, Mark Magier of Phoenix; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Morris M. ZegersonMorris M. Zegerson of Tempe died Aug. 20, 2003. He was 93. He was born in Russia and moved to Arizona in 1975 from Pennsylvania. He was a retired pharmacist. He was president and member of Galen Pharmaceutical Society, a life member of Zionist Organization of America and former treasurer of Duquesne Pharmacy Alumni Association.Survivors include his son, Herry Zegerson of Tempe; and four grandchildren. Steven Jay PearlmanSteven Jay Pearlman, age 60, passed away August 21, 2003 in Phoenix. He was born in Chicago and moved to Scottsdale five years ago. Steven was a real estate portfolio manager.Survivors include his wife Linda Pearlman, sons Scott (Darlene) Pearlman and Noel (fiancee, Alison Zelen) Pearlman; daughters Helaine (Mitchell) Rosenberg and Jodi (Martin) Rosenthal; step-daughter Mindy Pinard; sister Roberta Katz; father Irving (Adele) Pearlman; and grandchildren Lauren and Allie Rothschild and step-grandchildren Joey and Shane Pinard. Steven Pearlman was preceded in death by his first wife of 33 years Louise Pearlman. Irving Pearlman was preceded in death by his first wife Lois Pearlman. Lena ShalekLena Shalek, age 83, passed away August 23, 2003 in Tempe. She was born in Fort Kent, Maine and has been a resident of the East Valley for the past 32 years. Lena had worked for A.S.U., was a volunteer for the Chandler Public Library, and was a member of Temple Beth Sholom and Jewish Women International.Survivors include her daughters Anne (Carlton) Brooks and Ellen (Roger) Heymann; son Ian (Constance) Shalek; brother Abraham (Edith) Plesset; and four grandchildren. He was born in Manhattan, N.Y. and moved to Arizona in 1964 from North Carolina. A dedicated researcher as well as a published author, Herb was a longtime instructor of Anthropology and Sociology at Phoenix College.Survivors include sons Mike (Nan) Shellans of Phoenix and Drew (Linda) Willow of Seattle; uncle Hartley Shellans of Naples, Fla.; cousin Mort (Sandy) Goldman of Lake Tahoe; and cousin Morris (Sally) Justein of Toronto, Canada.
