Obituaries

Ruth Irene Flax

Ruth Irene Flax of Phoenix died July 26, 2003. She was 78. She was born in Lymon, Colo., and moved to Arizona in 1951 from Oregon. She was a retired businesswoman.

Survivors include her daughter, Lili Ann Lustig of Phoenix; sons, Davvid Flax and Roger Flax, both of Phoenix; sisters, Vicki Boling of Houston and Terri Davis of Waynesbough, Ga.; brother, Louis Ortiz of Oxnard, Calif.; and five grandchildren.

Private services were held. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary of Arizona. Contributions are suggested to Hospice of the Valley Gardiner Home, 1522 W. Myrtle Ave., Phoenix 85021.



Rae Rabinowitz

Rae Rabinowitz of Paradise Valley died July 23, 2003. She was 97. She was born in Camden, N.J., and moved to Arizona in 1969. She was a retired employee of Blue Cross/Blue Shield in Philadelphia and Phoenix. She was a member of Hadassah.

Survivors include her daughter, Marlene Mundel of Phoenix; son, David Rabinowitz of Paradise Valley; and four grandchildren.

Services were held at Beth El Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary of Arizona. Contributions are suggested to Jewish Family & Children's Service, 2033 N. Seventh St., Phoenix 85006.



Anne Katz

Anne Katz of Chandler passed away July 23, 2003 after a long battle with cancer. She was a member of Temple Beth Sholom in Chandler and a long-time member of Temple Beth El in Boca Raton, Fla.

Anne was beloved by all she touched. She served her country during World War II as an Army nurse and had an abiding love of Judaism and Jewish learning.

She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Irwin Katz of Chandler; daughters Susan Katz (Howard) Weinstein of Mesa and Hanna (David) Kliegman of Tonasket, Wash.; and grandchildren Joe and Sarah Kliegman of Tonasket. Other survivors include sister-in-law Elaine Katz and cousin Naomi Michelson.

Arrangements were by Green Acres and burial was at the National Memorial Cemetery, Phoenix. Contributions in her memory are suggested to Temple Beth Sholom, 3400 N. Dobson Rd., Chandler, AZ 85224; Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014; or a charity of your choice.



Shirley E. Silver

Shirley E. Silver (née Felner), age 84, passed away on July 25, 2003 in Phoenix. She was born in Chicago and moved to Phoenix a year ago from Florida. Shirley always said she was lucky to have been married to three wonderful men, Philip Tolchin, Maurice Kaplan and Albert Silver. She was very proud of her son Howard (Merle) Tolchin, her grandchildren Rebecca (Barry) Shevat and Dayna Tolchin and her great-granddaughters Jordyn and Sydney Shevat; also her brother Glenn (Ayleene) Felner and their family who live in Illinois.

Shirley enjoyed traveling the world, bowling, and playing Mah Jongg and had a zest for life.

Funeral services were held Sunday, July 27, 2003. Contributions in her memory are requested to American Cancer Society, 2929 E. Thomas Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85016; or Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014. Arrangements by Sinai Mortuary.
