Jewish News, JCC create partnership

STAFF REPORT
Beginning this week, the Valley of the Sun Jewish Community Center and Jewish News of Greater Phoenix are teaming up to bring the Valley Jewish community closer together.

The partnership will deliver every weekly issue of the Jewish News to 9,000 households throughout the Valley - joining 6,800 Jewish News subscriber households and 2,200 JCC member households.

The JCC is purchasing Jewish News subscriptions for its members and will distribute seasonal program guides and weekly event information to members through advertisements appearing in the centerfold of the newspaper.

The greatly expanded communication is a cost-effective way for both partners to reach more community members every week, said Jewish News Publisher Flo Eckstein. More readers will get news about the Jewish world - locally, nationally and internationally - as well as information about JCC current events and ongoing programs.

Inside this week's issue is the "JCC Fall Children & Youth Classes & Program Guide." The Aug. 8 issue will include a JCC guide to adult programs.

The partnership "is a milestone in community collaboration," said Mark Shore, president of the Valley of the Sun Jewish Community Center.

It unites "two vibrant segments of the community - Jewish News' intensely committed, involved, loyal subscribers throughout the Greater Phoenix metro-politan area, and the JCC's freshly engaged, dynamic members," said Eckstein.

The newness of the Jewish community, rapid popu-lation growth, and demo-graphic, geographic and lifestyle diversities "create extraordinary challenges for our Jewish institutions," she said. The 2002 Greater Phoenix Jewish Community Study found 44,000 Jewish households; 10,000 had lived in the Valley less than five years, and fewer than 16,000 said they felt connected to the comunity.

"I am very eager to find ways in which we can get unaffiliated Jews connected through Jewish News and the JCC," Shore said.

Additional partnership projects include Jewish News media sponsorship of selected communitywide JCC events, newcomer welcome packages, and a youth page with stories written by young writers for young readers.

The Valley of the Sun Jewish Community Center is at 12701 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale. Call 480-483-7121.

Jewish News paid sub-scribers who are JCC members may transfer the remainder of their current Jewish News subscription to a friend or neighbor who does not currently subscribe. To request a Subscription Transfer Form, send name, address, phone number and subscriber account number to Deb Karel by e-mail, deb_karel@jewishaz.com; fax, 602-870-0426; or mail, Jewish News, 1625 E. Northern Ave., Suite 106, Phoenix, AZ 85020.
