Valley golfer wins first PGA title

Phoenix resident Jonathan Kaye won his first-ever PGA Tour title at the Buick Classic at Westchester Country Club in Harrison, N.Y., held June 19-22.

Kaye defeated John Rollins by sinking a 12-foot eagle putt from the back of the 18th green in a sudden death playoff, according to the Associated Press.

"I was hitting it pretty well and I was putting really well," reflects Kaye. "I was feelin' it."

Kaye also beat golfing legend Tiger Woods. Kaye, however, was not fazed by Woods' presence.

"I suppose if it was your first time and you were out there playing with Tiger Woods, you might be somewhat enamored or in awe," says Kaye. "You kind of have to get past that point when you do it on a weekly basis."

Kaye's winnings from the tournament amount to $900,000.

The 32-year-old golfer has been playing professionally since 1994 and won the Colorado Open in 1996. He also had the opportunity to play in the Master's tournament in 2001.

In upcoming weeks, Kaye will participate in the British Open, the Greater Hartford Open, the International and the Deutsche Bank US Championship.

Kaye is hoping that the win will build his confidence in upcoming events and is "hoping for more wins."

Kaye, a native of Denver, has been residing in the Valley for 23 years. He is the son of Ellen and Craig Dean, the owners of Miracle Mile Deli at Park Central Mall in Phoenix, and is married to Jennifer Kaye.
