ObituariesClara Esther ZiemandClara Esther Ziemand of Peoria died June 25, 2003. She was 88. She was born in Denver and moved to Arizona in 1975. She was a retired special education teacher. She was a past member of Hadassah of the West Valley and a member of Temple Beth Shalom.Survivors include her daughter, Marilyn Speken of Phoenix; son, Ralph Speken of New York City; and two grandchildren. Services were held at Phoenix Memorial Park. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix 85014. Richard I. 'Dick' TrepperRichard I. "Dick" Trepper of Scottsdale died June 27, 2003. He was 66. He was born in Bronx, N.Y., and moved to Arizona in 1995 from Indiana. He was a salesman for Courier Service and served in the U.S. Army. He was a member, chairman of the ritual committee and vice president of the Men's Club at Har Zion Congregation.Survivors include his wife, Sandra of Scottsdale; son, Michael Trepper of Canton, Ga.; brother, Alvin Trepper of San Ramm, Calif.; and two grandchildren. Services were held at Green Acres Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to Har Zion Congregation Torah Repair Fund, 6140 E. Thunderbird Road, Scottsdale 85254. Philip J. HirschPhilip J. Hirsch, 80, of Scottsdale, died June 27, 2003. Born April 16, 2003, in Brooklyn, N.Y. Survived by his wife, Judith Hirsch of Scottsdale; son, Larry (Iva) Hirsch of Paradise Valley; brother, Gerald (Helen) Hirsch of Tucson; sister-in-law, Marlene Hirsch of Tucson; grandchildren, Adina and Rebecca Hirsch. Preceded in death by a brother, Arthur Hirsch. He was a WW II U.S. Army Air Corps Veteran, and earned the rank of Captain. He was a member of B'rith Sholom Synagogue in Prescott, served on the executive committee of Jewish Family and Children's Services, and on various other boards and committees.Graveside service were held Sunday, June 29, 2003 at Evergreen Cemetery in Tucson, with Rabbi Barton Lee officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Jewish Family and Children's Services in Phoenix or Desert Mountain Region of Young Judaea in Scottsdale. No flowers. Jacob ShaphrenJacob Shaphren, 83, of Phoenix passed away July 1, 2003. Jacob never gave up his optimism that he would prevail in his battle against lymphoma. Jacob was born in Des Moines, Iowa to Joseph and Pauline (Alter) Shaphren. He graduated from East High School in 1937 and from Drake University in 1947 (after interrupting his studies to serve with honor as a First Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II). Jacob moved to Phoenix in 1947. Jacob was a Certified Public Accountant for over 50 years and continued working almost every day until the last stage of his illness.He will be missed by all those lucky enough to have known him, especially by his clients, co-workers and loving family: wife of over 56 years, Helen, son Paul, daughter Susanne and brother William (Margaret). In lieu of flowers, please honor Jack's memory with a contribution to the American Cancer Society, 2929 E. Thomas Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85016 or a charity of your choice.
