Obituaries

Mark Rosner

Mark Rosner of Phoenix died June 15, 2003. He was 53. He was born in Phoenix. He was a local stamps and coins dealer.

Survivors include his wife, Sherry of Chicago; daughter, Emilie Ann Rosner of Chicago; parents, Lee and Robert Rosner of Phoenix; and sisters, Gail Fries of Bloomingdale, Ill., and Judy Moore of Sleepy Hollow, Ill.

Private services were held in Chicago. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary.



Roslyn Checkoway

Roslyn Checkoway of Scottsdale died June 12, 2003. She was 86. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and moved to Arizona in 1996 from Massachusetts. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her daughter, Gail Klain of Lowell, Mass.; son, Dennis Checkoway of Scottsdale; sister, Minnie Gurin of Bronx, N.Y.; and four grandchildren.

Services were held in Salisbury, Mass. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to American Diabetes Association, 8125 N. 23rd Ave., #222, Phoenix 85021.



Alvin Schatz

Alvin Schatz of Scottsdale died June 15, 2003. He was 85. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and moved to Arizona in 2001 from Florida. He was a retired musician and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Eleanor of Scottsdale; daughter, Suzanne Monashkin of Scottsdale; sister, Marcia Goren of Phoenix; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held at Paradise Memorial Gardens. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to Hillel Jewish Student Center, 1012 S. Mill Ave., Tempe.



DeVore "Slash" Gordon

DeVore "Slash" Gordon of Glendale died June 15, 2003. He was 77. He was born in Chicago and moved to Arizona in 1933 from Texas. He was a retired owner of a hobby store and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II. He was an original founder of Camp Rainbow, a camp for children who survived cancer. He was also a volunteer probation officer, was involved in the "Scared Straight" program and volunteered at Camp Courage, where he taught crafts to burn victims.

Survivors include his wife, Harriet of Glendale; daughters, Sally Woodfill and Lynne Gordon, both of Phoenix, Debbie Meringer of Glendale and Sherry Gordon of Las Vegas; son, Barry Gordon of Phoenix; and six grandchildren.

Services were held at Beth Israel Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix 85016 or Camp Rainbow, c/o Phoenix Children's Hospital, 1919 E. Thomas Road, Phoenix 85016.
