Collect name database for annual campaign

Editor:
Mim Bottner's letter to the editor ("Outreach remains federation's goal," Jewish News, May 23) mentioned the good work done as a result of contributions to the annual campaign of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix. She referred to other letters complaining about failures in soliciting funds by the federation.

Bottner is one of many volunteers who gives time and energy to make the campaign succeed. They are primarily responsible for its success. She suggests that the need is for more volunteers. I am making a different point.

There are thousands of Jews who do not get solicited because their names are not on the federation's list - this despite the fact that many of them belong to a synagogue, subscribe to this paper, or are members of other Jewish organizations. I suggest that a procedure be set up whereby names of persons affiliated with any Jewish organization be referred to the federation. It does not take a rocket scientist to set up such a system.

It's not volunteers which are needed - it's leadership. The federation leaders need to think outside the box. They need to look at new ways to reach the unreached.
