Federation failed 'to ask'

Editor:
Florence Eckstein's commentary, "If you don't ask..." (Jewish News, April 18) brought back memories of my efforts to get the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix to reach more Jews in their Annual Campaign. My wife and I were out of the country for four years by which time we were taken off the federation's solicitation list and could not get back on.

When we returned, we subscribed to the Jewish News of Greater Phoenix and I joined the Jewish War Veterans. However, no connection was made with these Jewish entities and the federation mailing/calling list. I did call several times and was able to secure a pledge card, but the following year we were again not solicited.

I contacted the federation and met two separate times with different mid-level officials. I suggested that there be a tie in between Jewish entities (Jewish News of Greater Phoenix, Jewish War Veterans, synagogues, etc.) and the federation. It would be relatively easy to set up a system whereby persons connected to the Jewish community in one way or another would be referred to the federation for announcements or solicitations. The officials were receptive but nothing came of it.
