Jewish News co-founder dies

Joseph S. Stocker
Joseph S. Stocker
Co-founder and former editor of Phoenix Jewish News Joseph S. Stocker died on April 19, 2003. He was 90 years old.

Stocker joined the Phoenix Jewish News in the late 1940s as co-publisher with Bud Goldman. Stocker and Goldman took over the then-monthly publication from the Phoenix Jewish Community Council (predecessor to Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix) to create an independent Jewish comm-unity newspaper.

Soon after, Goldman bought out Stocker and hired him as editor, a position Stocker held until 1961 when the paper was sold to Pearl and Cecil Newmark.

Stocker also served as a free-lance writer for Sat-urday Evening Post, Collier's Redbook, McCall's, Popular Mechanics, Reader's Digest and Arizona Highways. He wrote four books on education and travel.

Stocker was a veteran of World War II. He was involved with the Council for Civic Unity, the Arizona Civil Liberties Union, the Anti-De-famation League and was editor of the ADL newsletter on a volunteer basis.

Survivors include his sons, David Stocker, Marc Stocker and Steven Stocker; sister, Naomi Gordon; brother, Allan Stocker and one grandchild.

Funeral services were held April 22 at Sinai Memorial Chapel.
