Multicultural tribute omits Jews

A multicultural tribute to Phoenix Mayor Skip Rimsza, honoring his dedication to diversity, was held on April 16 - the first night of Passover.

The tribute was sponsored by APS and the Greater Phoenix Convention & Visitors Bureau.

"I was very upset for a number of reasons," after receiving the invitation, said Rabbi Robert L. Kravitz, executive director of the American Jewish Committee.

"First, because it was on seder night," he said. "Secondly, because it's almost like a slap in the face to say we're going to celebrate multiculturalism and we're excluding the Jews."

APS spokesman Jim McDonald said that April 16 was the only date the mayor had available for this event and that APS is "very sensitive to Passover or any other date important to any group at all." APS was "hoping to celebrate diversity, not to create an issue" and the event is to "honor something good that includes every group of people and logs the mayor's efforts from being sensitive to the importance of diversity ... The timing is unfortunate."
