ObituariesFlorence G. FrankFlorence G. Frank of Phoenix died March 10, 2003. She was 96. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and moved to Arizona in 1947 from Tennessee.Frank was a retired social worker and the former executive director of Jewish Family and Children's Service, a position she held for 12 years. Frank worked in the agency's resettlement program for German and Polish refugees and handled adoptions throughout the 1950s. She also helped the JFCS develop services in Mesa, Tempe and Guadalupe. Frank was a member of the Arizona Civil Liberties Union, Friends of Mexican Art and the Youth Evaluation and Treatment Center, a program she helped establish in the 1970s for at-risk teens. She was also a consultant to Mesa United Way, a board member of the Phoenix Art Museum and a docent at Scottsdale Center for the Arts. Survivors include her son, Henry Frank of Phoenix. Services were held at Phoenix Memorial Park. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to Chabad Lubavitch Center, 2110 E. Lincoln Drive, Phoenix 85016. Nate BernsteinNate Bernstein of Phoenix died March 13, 2003. He was 88. He was born in Pittsburgh, and moved to Arizona in 1961 from West Virginia. He was an automobile salesman for Bill Luke Chrysler.He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a member of Jewish War Veterans. Survivors include his daughter, Joan Rothfeder of Phoenix; son, Alan Bernstein of Phoenix; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Services were held at Phoenix Memorial Park. Marcelle Aimee CastiglioneMarcelle Aimee Castiglione of Scottsdale died March 14, 2003. She was 78. She was born in Tunis, Tunisia in North Africa and moved to Arizona in 1988 from Wichita, Kan.Survivors include her daughters, Vivian Hinckley, Michelle Borin-Devouno and Danielle Castiglione, all of Wichita, Kan.; sons, Richard Castiglione of Fort Worth, Texas; Gerard Castiglione of Parsons, Kan.; and Claude Castiglione of Dallas; sisters, Nellie Russo and Francine McClung, both of Scottsdale; brothers, James Belhassen and Frank Belhassen, both of Scottsdale; 16 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Sally NeerSally Neer of Northfield, Ill., died March 13, 2003. She was 91. She was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and was a former resident of Scottsdale. She was a homemaker.Survivors include her daughter, Nancy Neer-Silverman of Northfield, Ill.; son, Michael Neer of Scottsdale; and three grandchildren. Services were held at Beth Israel Cemetery. She was 55. She was born in New York City and was a former Arizona resident. She was a counselor.She was a member of The Urban League and several women's groups. Survivors include her husband, Gary Amundson of Los Angeles; daughter, Danielle Weir of Santa Monica, Calif.; son, Joshua Weir of Valencea, Calif.; and brothers, Barry Levine of Tamarac, Fla., and Bruce Levine of Oakland, Calif. Sarah Fonstein Marcus GutwirthSarah Fonstein Marcus Gutwirth, age 101; born October 6, 1901.Sarah was born in Chicago and experienced World War I and World War II. She kept up on current news and events and was apprehensive about the start of the New Century. She attended Lake View High School in Chicago, Chicago Musical College and Pestalozzi Froebel Teachers College. Starting during the depression years she was employed by the City of Chicago Board of Health until retirement. Sarah was very happy to move to Scottsdale in 1986; she loved the warm weather, the many desert plants and the sound of the birds. In Scottsdale, Sarah volunteered for many years at United Blood Services. She loved playing bingo for recreation and was an avid reader (large print books). Survivors include her daughter Dr. Jane M. Podall, son-in-law Robert, and grandson Charles M. Podall. She had many friends. Services were held at Temple Solel, Paradise Valley, March 20, 2003. Sinuk, age 61, of Scottsdale, passed away on March 17, 2003, after his long and courageous fight with lung cancer.He is survived by his wife Donna; children Ronald Garland of San Diego, Laura Musikantow of Scottsdale, Brian Sinuk of Scottsdale, David Sinuk and wife Lisa of Phoenix, and his brother Stewart Sinuk and wife Lori of Farming Hills, Mich. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Jacob, Charlie, Lexi and Macey; as well as seven nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held on Friday, March 21, 2003, at 11:00 a.m., at Green Acres Memorial Gardens, 401 N. Hayden Rd., Scottsdale, AZ 85257. Lucas Young DanielLucas Young Daniel, age 18, passed away March 15, 2003 in Flagstaff as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was a graduate of Browning Academy in La Verkin, Utah and was currently a student at Northern Arizona University in the honor's program. He earned a black-belt in karate and was an avid skateboarder.Survivors include his parents Barbara and Brian Daniel; grandparents Pat and Marty Berger, Phyllis and Murray Cohen and Joan Daniel; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Graveside funeral services were held March 19, 2003 at Greenwood Memory Lawn Cemetery in Phoenix. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory are requested to Lucas Y. Born in St. Louis, she moved to Phoenix in 1957. Zelda was preceded in death by her husband Ray Mitchell.Survivors include her children Marilyn (Donn), Mel (Bev), Judy (Paul) and Sandy (Joel); grandchildren Jeff (Naomi), David (Juliana), Emily (Shawn), Darren, Jeanette (Mark), Carolyn (Wes), Brenda (Gonzalo) and Gregory; and great-grandson Cameron. He was born December 28, 1911 in Warsaw, Poland. He came to America in 1927 and grew up in New York City. He was married to Rose Zuckerman in 1935. She preceded him in death in 2002.Jack came to the Valley in 1949 and was a member of B'nai B'rith. He is survived by his sons Milton (Barbara), Fred (Ellen) and Raymond (Sally); brothers Charlie and Irving; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Graveside services were held March 19, 2003, at Beth El Cemetery in Phoenix. Contributions in his memory may be made to any charity of choice. Arrangements by Sinai Mortuary. |
