Obituaries

Shirley Wolosin

Shirley Wolosin of Phoenix died Feb. 26, 2003. She was 93. She was born in Paterson, N.J., and moved to Arizona in 1999 from Cincinnati. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her daughter, Maris Lory of Phoenix; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services were held at Beth El Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to Hospice of Arizona, 2222 W. Northern Ave., #A-100, Phoenix 85201 and Arizona Humane Society, 9226 N. 13th Ave., Phoenix 85201.



Beatrice Luper

Beatrice Luper of Sun Lakes died March 1, 2003. She was 82. She was born in New York City and moved to Arizona in 1985. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her daughter, Joanne Greenbaum of Scottsdale; son, Andrew Luper of Phoenix; and three grandchildren.

Services were held at Beth El Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix 85014.



Elaine F. Gan

Elaine F. Gan of Phoenix died March 1, 2003. She was 73. She was born in Allentown, Pa., and moved to Arizona in 1956. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her sons, Scott Gan of Tucson and Marshall Gan of Phoenix; brother, William Mechanic of Allentown, Pa; and three grandchildren.

Services were held at Evergreen Cemetery in Tucson. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix 85014.



Dorothy Pickelner

Dorothy Pickelner, age 100, passed away on February 27, 2003 in Phoenix. Born in Lithuania on February 25, 1903, she was the daughter of Louis (Lazar) and Rose (Risha) Wahl. She was preceded in death by her late husband Sidney Pickelner who passed away in 1961.

Dorothy moved to Phoenix in 1947 from Cleveland. She earned a B.A. from Western Reserve University. She taught high school in Ohio for 20 years. She also taught Humanities at Camelback High School in Phoenix for 10 years where she created the gifted program, which took students to Europe in a summer education program.

Dorothy's activities included Hadassah, Bikkur Cholim, Workmen's Circle, Phoenix Symphony, Jewish Community Center, B'nai B'rith, Pioneer Women, NA'AMAT, Bible Study Group, Book Review Club, Kivel and Jewish Family and Children's Service. She was past President of the Chapter and Region and on the National Board of Hadassah. She was a Friend of the Phoenix Library and served on the Board of the Phoenix Jewish Community Center. She was Chairperson twice of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix Women's Campaign as well as Chairperson of the Women's Division of the Jewish Federation. She was a member of Temple Beth Israel and active with their Sylvia Plotkin Judaica Museum. Dorothy received the Medal of Honor Award which is the highest award the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix bestows on an individual. She loved reading, people and traveling. She participated in many fundraising events, moving audiences with her wit and speaking ability.

Funeral services were held March 2, 2003 at Sinai Mortuary Chapel. Contributions in her memory are suggested to Hadassah, 7000 E. Shea Blvd. #251, Scottsdale, AZ 85254; or Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix, 12701 N. Scottsdale Rd. #201, Scottsdale, AZ 85254.



Dr. Eric Robert Robinson

Dr. Eric Robert Robinson, 68, of Surprise, died of cancer on February 28, 2003. He retired to the West Valley in 2000. He practiced oral surgery in Toledo, Ohio, for 26 years, also founding and managing the dental residency program at St. Vincent Medical Center. In 1989, he moved to Cincinnati, where he practiced oral surgery and served as a dental consultant. He attended Northwestern University and its dental school.

Survivors include his wife, Sue Robinson of Surprise; daughter Holly Robinson of Cincinnati; son Stuart Robinson of Alexandria, Va.; sister Mariellen Miller of Phoenix; and nieces Jennifer Traulsen of Scottsdale and Elisa Aellig of Phoenix.

A memorial service was held on Sunday, March 2, 2003 at Temple Beth Shalom in Sun City. Donations may be made to the temple at 12202 101st Ave., Sun City, AZ 85351; or to Hospice of the Valley, 9720 W. Peoria, Ste. 128, Peoria, AZ 85345. For the latter, please designate gifts for West Valley outpatient services and the Sun City inpatient facility.



Theodore (Ted) E. Shaffer

Theodore (Ted) E. Shaffer, 73, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away on February 28, 2003. Ted was born in Cleveland on December 23, 1929. He moved to Phoenix in 1959, and loved Arizona. He was active in his Temple and in the community. He was generous, friendly and warm to his family and friends. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Ted is survived by his wife of 52 years, Caroline; children Elyse Lerner (Stan), Bill (Julie) and Jon (Pam); five grandchildren; brother Jack (Charlene); sister-in-law Alice Kelman and loving nephews and nieces. Services were held at Sinai Mortuary Chapel on March 3, 2003. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014; or Kivel Campus of Care, 3020 N. 36th St., Phoenix, AZ 85018.



Paul H. Solomon

Paul H. Solomon, 87, passed away on February 28, 2003 in Scottsdale. Born in Philadelphia, he had worked for the Philadelphia Gas Works as a salesman; he retired and then later moved to Arizona in 1998. Paul was a veteran of World War II; he served in the U.S. Army Intelligence Unit in Europe.

He is survived by his wife Sylvia, his sons Raymond (Kathy) and Ira (Madyln), and five grandchildren (Jane, Abby, Evan, Shari and Jordan). His brother Benjamin also survives him.

Graveside services were held March 2, 2003 at Beth Israel Cemetery. Contributions may be sent to the Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014. Arrangements by Sinai Mortuary.



Rose Waller

Rose Waller, age 92, passed away March 3, 2003 in Phoenix. She was born in Romania and moved to Phoenix 26 years ago from New York. Rose was a member of Beth Joseph Congregation and NA'AMAT.

Survivors include her husband Wallace B. Waller, son Gilbert (Carol) Eisenberg and daughter Irene (Frank) Mattei. Funeral services and interment were held March 4, 2003 in Beth El Cemetery in Phoenix. Contributions in her memory are suggested to Beth Joseph Congregation, 515 E. Bethany Home Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85012. Arrangements by Sinai Mortuary.



Inez R. Golden

Inez R. Golden, age 87, of Phoenix, passed away March 1, 2003. She was a warm and wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, a vivacious woman whose love of life was inspiring and contagious. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 60 years, Jack Golden.

Survivors include her daughter Olivia (Jack) Cupp of Phoenix; son Ken (Debi) Golden of Marlborough, Mass.; grandchildren Roger Walter of Phoenix, Melissa and Jared Golden, both of Richmond, Va.; and two great-grandchildren.

Graveside funeral services were held March 3, 2003 at Phoenix Memorial Park. Contributions in her memory are suggested to Kivel Campus of Care, 3020 N. 36th St., Phoenix, AZ 85018. Arrangements by Sinai Mortuary.
