History of Israel offered online

Arizona State University will offer "Modern Israel: Origins to Present" as an online course in the first summer session, June 2 through July 3.

The course, taught by Dr. Michael Rubinoff, covers Israel's modern history, from Herzl to Sharon, as well as Israel's cultural, economic and social development since 1948.

The course was first offered in a three-week winter session and filled within the first two weeks of reg-istration. Rubinoff said there was such a demand for the course that an additional 15 spots were opened. He still received more than 50 requests for overrides from individuals who were unable to get into the class.

"Comments about the course were extremely positive from winter session," Rubinoff said. "One student suggested the course be made mandatory for all college students. The excellent decorum and respect for different viewpoints shown among the students in the Web class certainly demon-strated to me how this subject can be discussed in an academic setting, away from the kind of discord so unfortunately common on many college campuses today."

The content of the class includes videos, reading, a weekly online lecture and discussion posted on the Internet. There is a proctored final exam, which can be arranged through ASU Distance Education for out-of-area students.

Anyone with Internet access can take the course. The winter course was taken by students in New York, Italy and California.

Rubinoff received a doctorate in modern Jewish history and has been a historian in the ASU Religious Studies and Humanities departments since 1997. Although this is his first online course at ASU, he taught previous online classes for the University of Maryland and University of Phoenix.

The course is offered through the Religious Studies Department (regi- stration line 51975) or the Humanities Department (registration line 60325). ASU students may register online at www.asu.edu. Non-students can call the summer sessions office at 480-965-6611.

For questions about course content (not registration), contact Rubinoff at mrubinoff@asu.edu.
