Yiddish archivist speaks about tradition

Bob Freedman, co-curator of the Bob and Molly Freedman Jewish Sound Archive at the University of Pennsylvania and a nationally-known archivist, will speak 2 p.m. Sunday, March 2, at Beth El Congregation, 1118 W. Glendale Ave., Phoenix.

The 90-minute program, "Tradition & Modernity: A History of the Jewish People in Yiddish Song from 1800 to 1939," is presented under the auspices of the Beth El Yiddish Club, Har Zion Yiddish Club and Temple Solel Yiddish Club. It will trace the history of European Jewry and consider the relevance of that history in relation to today's headlines. Admission is $3.

The Sound Archive is the result of more than 40 years of collecting and cataloguing more than 28,000 audio tracks of Jewish music. Visit http://dewey.library.upenn. edu/sceti/freedman/index.cfm. Call Marvin Freeman at 602-242-9527.
