Letters to the EditorFebruary 14, 2003
A few extraordinary menEditor:In your feature article, "Phoenix in the '50s" (Jewish News, Feb. 7), one of the photos in the montage was, as you stated, "a group of men gather for the dedication of the Temple Beth Israel building in 1950." This was not just any group of men. In the top row, from the left, there is Nat Silverman, Nelson Glueck (President of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations), and Archie Kroloff, my grandfather. In the bottom row, from the left, was Charles Korrick, Rabbi A.L. Krohn of Temple Beth Israel, Harold Diamond and Al Spector. They were temple presidents, community leaders, business leaders and family men. Jews who moved to Phoenix were told to visit these men and to ask for help finding a job. At that time, Phoenix was a small city. These men were part of an integral link helping build the foundations that we know today in our Jewish, civic and business lives. Those of us who remember them wish there were more like them in today's more selfish society. Jonathan Rosenthal Cave Creek Editor's note: Those who recognize any of the unidentified people in the photos should notify the Arizona Jewish Historical Society at azjhs@aol.com.
