Arts briefsBassist visits Brandeis music study groupPhoenix Symphony Principal Bass Barry Olson will be the featured artist at the final program in the 2002-2003 series of lectures/recitals sponsored by the Brandeis University Women's Music Study Group. He will perform and speak 1-2:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10, at Palo Cristi Church, 3535 E. Lincoln Drive, Paradise Valley.Olson has been guest conductor for the Arizona All-State Orchestra and various Honor Orchestras. He recently retired from the Flagstaff Music Festival after 22 years as conductor of its student orchestras. The Phoenix Symphony recently appointed him as one of two musicians who create and moderate the orchestra's educational programs for in-school concerts. Jewish orchestra seeking volunteersThe Judaic Cultural Orchestra of Arizona, benefiting Arizona Friends of Magen David Adom (ARMDI) and under the direction of Cantor Marc Philippe, is seeking volunteers to get involved in a Yom Ha'atzmaut concert.The concert, to take place Tuesday, May 6, at the Scottsdale Center for the Arts, will feature some 30 musicians from the Phoenix Symphony. The orchestra's mission is to promote new Jewish composers, musicians and vocalists, as well as rediscover Jewish musical treasures from around the world. Call 602-787-2930. Musical auditions at Temple Beth IsraelTemple Beth Israel, in collaboration with cantor Mikhal Shiff-Matter, is planning a fully staged concert version of the musical "Milk & Honey" to be presented May 7 in cele-bration of Israel Indepen-dence Day. There will be a small orchestra.Auditions will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, and 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10, at Temple Beth Israel, 10460 N. 56th St., Scottsdale. There are openings for the chorus, one child's role, and 8-9 singing roles for adult characters. No appointment necessary. In addition to cold- reading dialogue, audi-tioners must have a song prepared. A pianist will provide accompaniment. In addition, Jessica Marhoffer, who teaches Israeli dancing for Hebrew High School, will work with children on an Israeli dance number.
