Rick Recht returns to Temple Chai

Jewish songwriter Rick Recht will perform Jan. 24-26 at Temple Chai, 4645 E. Marilyn Road, Phoenix.

Recht's upbeat music blends pop with Hebrew, Jewish text and social responsibility. His interactive concerts feature non-stop audience participation such as singing, clapping and dancing. He has garnered a following among the national Jewish youth movements, and has played more than 70 Jewish camps from coast to coast. A St. Louis native, he is currently an artist-in-residence at United Hebrew Congregation in St. Louis.

There will be a children's concert called "RU Free 2B? Free to be the Jew in Me" 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 24. Free with a donation of non-perishable food items for the Paradise Valley Food Bank.

There will also be a family concert 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 26. Tickets are $10 adults, $5 students and seniors.

'Café Tel Aviv'

Temple Beth Shalom, 12202 101st Ave., Sun City, presents "Café Tel Aviv," a musical program of modern Israeli and Jewish theater music, 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2.

Soloists Cantor Baruch Koritan and Cantor Michal Shiff-Matter will be accompanied by a 10-piece Klezmer orchestra. Admission is $8 and includes pizza.

Art around us

"The South of France Through the Artist's Eyes" is the topic of the Jan. 21 program presented at the Tri-City Jewish Community Center, 1521 S. Indian Bend Road, Tempe.

The discussion and slide show, presented by a docent from the Phoenix Art Museum, will focus on the attraction of the south of France for impressionist and post-impressionist artists such as Van Gogh, Matisse, Picasso and others.

Future programs include "The Art of Chinese Ivory Carving" Feb. 11, "The Phillips Collection: Masterworks from El Greco to Picasso" March 11, and "Medieval Art" April 8.

Each program begins at 10:30 a.m. Free to all East Valley community members.

Primetimers discuss art masterworks

Hadassah Primetimers will hold an open meeting 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, in Robb and Stucky's com-munity room, 15440 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale. Francine Schauer, a docent from the Phoenix Art Museum, will present a lecture and slide show on "El Greco to Picasso," an upcoming exhibit.

Dessert and beverages will be served. Bring a brown bag lunch.

Live music at King Solomon's Pizza

The Simcha Street Band will perform 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, at King Solomon's Pizza, 4810 N. Seventh St., Phoenix.

The live music event will feature Yaakov Stolberg and David Goldstein performing traditional Jewish melodies with a folk-rock, rhythm-and-blues twist.
