Jews in the Old West

"Snips and Clips: Jews in the American West - Hollywood Style" is the topic of a Legacy Series multimedia presentation sponsored by the Arizona Jewish Historical Society and the Arizona Humanities Council on Sunday, Jan. 12, at the Biltmore Medical Plaza, 2222 E. Highland Ave., Phoenix.

Bagels and coffee will be served at 10 a.m.; the program begins at 10:30 a.m.

Featured speaker is Alex Jay Kimmelman, a professional Tucson historian. He's currently the owner of Arizona History Associates, a consulting firm specializing in public history and cultural resources management. He's also the president of the Southern Arizona Jewish Historical Society.

Brunch is $5.

Safam in concert

Eight Arizona congregations are jointly sponsoring "Valley Congregations United in Song III: Safam in Concert," 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20, at the Scottsdale Center for the Arts, 7380 E. Second St.

Safam's members blend contemporary and traditional melodies and themes. The Boston-based band incorporates styles as diverse as rock & roll, pop, folk, Latin, Hasidic and cantorial to reach Jews of all ages and denominations.

The show is sponsored by Beth El Congregation, Temple Beth Israel, Temple Chai, Temple Emanuel, Temple Solel, Temple Kol Ami and Har Zion Congregation.

Tickets are $25, $36 and $54 and are available at any of the participating synagogues or by calling 602-944-3359.
