Drawing inspiration from his mother's life, Chicago playwright James Sherman wrote "Door to Door" as "kind of a tribute" to her and the women of her generation.

"When you have a writer in the family, there's always a chance that anything you say is going to end up as material somewhere," he says.

This comedy about three generations of women, presented by the Arizona Jewish Theatre Company, runs Dec. 28-Jan. 12 at the Playhouse on the Park in Phoenix.

Spanning 70 years of history, the story follows Mary Good-man and her search for identity after the death of her husband of 50 years. The story shifts back and forth in time and location, as Mary reflects on her life as a daughter, wife and mother.

"It's a very specific story about three specific characters," Sherman says. "What I always try to do, through a depiction of the very specific story, is imply some universal ideas."

In this instance, Mary is the daughter of Russian immigrants and grew up in Chicago, "but it's ultimately about mothers and daughters," he says.

Sherman also directs the play, which premiered in 2000 at Victory Gardens Theatre in Chicago, where he is the playwright in residence. The theater received the 2002 TONY award for best regional theater.

He is also the author of "Beau Jest," "Romance in D" and "God of Isaac," among others. "Door to Door" was performed recently in a New York theater and will move to off-Broadway in the spring.

The AJTC performance stars Cathy Dresbach as Mary, Angelica Frost as daughter Deborah and Delores Goldsmith as grandmother Bessie.

Sherman invites the community to bring their mothers, daughters, grandparents and grandchildren to the performance.

"If you have a mother or ever had a mother, I think you will relate to this play," he says.
