Beth El's Talmud Torah honored
BETH OLSON
Staff Writer

Beth El Congregation Talmud Torah has been recognized as a "Framework for Excellence School" by the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. The honor was bestowed by Cheryl Hammerman, vice president of the Mid-Bar Region of USCJ, in a ceremony held Nov. 20 at the Phoenix synagogue. State Rep. Barbara Leff, state senator-elect for District 11, was present at the dinner and ceremony.
The certification, which was awarded to only two schools - the other in Los Angeles - is awarded to educational programs that meet standards in professional development, curriculum development and family education. Cantor Marc Philippe, education director, spent the summer working through the application process.
"The school has to follow specific guidelines and high standards of education," he said. "Not only education, but also apply the things that we teach into the lives of the students. For example, we learn about the mitzvot, but (the students) have to be able to relate it and live their lives as young American Jews that live a modern Judaism in this society and live it proudly."
