Local day schools prepare for holidaysDay school roundup
Jess Schwartz Jewish Community High SchoolFour student government leaders just returned from the North American Association of Jewish High Schools Student Leadership Shabbaton in Detroit. Representing the high school were Sara Loeb, student government president; Joseph Giardina, student government secretary; Anna Harris and Marc Troisi, sophomore class senators; and Rabbi Moshe Sokol, Judaic studies coordinator.Other student government activities include a weekly Krispy Kreme doughnut sale; a magazine sale; participation in Book Buddies, the Jewish Community Relations Council's literacy program, at Madison Heights Elementary School; sponsoring the Cadence Club Dance on Saturday, Dec. 7; and a food drive for the holidays. The school is in the accreditation process from the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement. Colleen Megowan and Tina Sheinbein are the committee co-chairwomen. The first semester award ceremony for the Speech and Debate Team will be held Monday, Dec. 16. Fall registration for the class of 2007 is underway. Phoenix Hebrew AcademyStudent Council elections were held. The following students were elected: Sydni Zinker, eighth grade, president; Danielle Berger, seventh grade, president; Sasha Kandov, seventh grade, secretary; and Mark Eisenberg, sixth grade, treasurer.Class and individual pictures were taken at the end of October. The PTA sponsored a Misebat Rosh Chodesh (Rosh Chodesh party) with juice, cake and Hanukkah gelt on Nov. 6. Veteran's Day was commemorated with a special tribute performed by the second grade under the direction of their teacher, Diana Young. The academy participated in The Great National Jewish Read-In for the benefit of the Jewish Braille Institute. Students obtained sponsors and read as much as they could. The top school winners were Adam Zinker, Chaya Wolfe and Devori Wolfe. Every school day during Hanukkah has a special fun activity planned for the students to add to the celebration of the holiday. Activities include a Hanukkah song fest, the Maccabiah Games, a Hanukkah fair with arts and crafts activities, a Rosh Chodesh party and a student council sponsored surprise activity. Pardes Jewish Day SchoolThe students at Pardes, in association with Jodi Woodnick of Jewish Family and Children's Service, have adopted five families for the holidays. The families selected represent a diverse group from single-parent households to two-parent households adversely affected by the downturn in the economy. Children range in age from infant to high school. Students and faculty have spent the past few weeks purchasing new clothing, toys, school supplies and food vouchers for the families. Gifts will be distributed the week of Nov. 18 in time for Hanukkah and the week of Dec. 18 in time for Christmas. |
