'Mouse in the Rat Pack'

In the recently released book "Mouse in the Rat Pack: The Joey Bishop Story" (Taylor Trade Publishing, $27.95 hardcover), author Michael Seth Starr tells comedian Joey Bishop's life story, from neighborhood joke-ster to Hollywood star, and as a member of the famous "Rat Pack" - Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Peter Lawford and Sammy Davis, Jr.

Based on personal interviews with friends, foes and show business colleagues, the book follows Bishop's life from his birth in 1918 to Jewish immigrant parents to his emcee gig at President John F. Kennedy's inaugural gala to where he is today.

Ben Vereen to star in JFCS benefit

"Comedy Counts, Stand Up for the Cause," a benefit for Jewish Family & Children's Service, will be held 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1, at The Orpheum Theatre, 201 W. Washington St., Phoenix.

The evening will feature Tony and Emmy award-winner Ben Vereen, the comedy of Elon Gold (NBC"s "In Laws"), and emcee Mark Curtis (of KPNX TV 12). Senator Jon Kyl, co-sponsor of federal legislation to protect battered women, will introduce Vereen.

Jewish Family & Children's Service provided care and shelter for more than 21,000 battered women and children in Maricopa County last year. Less than 7 percent of those helped were Jewish. In most cases there was no charge to the victims of these violent crimes who were treated without regard to race or religion. Proceeds will go toward lowering Arizona's rate of child abuse and fatalities from domestic violence. Tickets are $35-$75.Call 602-534-5600 or 602-279-7655, ext. 285.
