Obituaries

Mel Roman

Mel Roman of Scottsdale died Nov. 9, 2002. He was 75. He was born in Bronx, N.Y., and moved to Arizona in 1989. He was a psychologist, artist and activist and served in the U.S. Navy in World War II. He was chairman of the board of the Cosanti Foundation, a past board member of the Scottsdale Cultural Council, and past commissioner of the Phoenix Public Arts Commission.

Survivors include his wife, Louise; daughter, Lisa Kappaz of Oak Park, Calif.; stepson Eric Shoemaker of New York City; brother, Richard of Toronto; and one grandchild.

A memorial will be held 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, at the Cosanti Foundation, 6433 E. Doubletree Ranch Road, Scottsdale.



Ethel Krenitz

Ethel Krenitz of Phoenix died Nov. 8, 2002. She was 79. She was born in Wilmington, Del., and moved to Arizona from New York in 1984. She was a retired schoolteacher.

Survivors include her husband, Irving; daughters, Merrill of Phoenix, and Ralle and Jill, both of Scottsdale; son, Andrew of Las Vegas; and five grandchildren.

Services were held at Phoenix Memorial Park, with Rabbi William C. Berk officiating. Arrangements were by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to Ellen Woodnick-Barbara Moss Fund at Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix 85014; or NA'AMAT - Rina Chapter, 15835 N. Sixth Drive, Phoenix.



Leonard Smith

Leonard B. Smith of Phoenix died Nov. 6, 2002. He was 81. He was born in Boston and moved to Arizona from Rhode Island in 1972. He was a retired manager and served in the U.S. Army in World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Sylvia; daughters, Jill Herschel of Phoenix and Cheryl of Mesa; son, Lawrence of Longwood, Fla.; sister, Evelyn Udel of Wellington, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services were held at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, with Rabbi William C. Berk officiating. Arrangements were by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to Arizona Kidney Foundation, 4203 E. Indian School Road, #140, Phoenix 85018.



Celia Miller

Celia Miller of Phoenix died Nov. 8, 2002. She was born in Pittsburgh and moved to Arizona in 1970. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her daughter, Janice Chapman of Phoenix; son, Lee of Los Angeles; sisters, Jean Federbusch of Del Ray Beach, Fla., and Elaine Shapiro of Phoenix; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held at Beth Israel Cemetery, with Messianic Rabbi Jack Zimmerman officiating. Arrangements were by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to Anti-Defamation League, 3550 N. Central Ave., #914, Phoenix 85012.



Shirley G. Leyton

Shirley G. Leyton, age 77, passed away November 12, 2002 in Paradise Valley, AZ. She was born in Bronx, New York and moved to the Valley 18 years ago from her native New York. She was the loving mother of Jeffrey (Merle) Leyton and Eric (Claudia) Leyton, devoted grandmother of Heather (Jonathan) Kadin, Nicole, Scott and Meredith Leyton and also survived by her brother Sidney Deutsch.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Nov. 14th in Sinai Mortuary Chapel, Phoenix.

Shlomi Shafir

Shlomi Shafir, age 55, passed away November 7, 2002 at his home in Phoenix. He was born in Tel Aviv, Israel and served in the Israeli Air Force. He was a certified financial planner with Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company and formerly in engineering and management with Motorola. He donated his time to many organizations and people, always wanting to help and make a positive difference.

He was a beloved husband to Nedda, father to Shira, Lilach and Orly, son to Zvi, uncle to Danit, Oren, Megan, and Brendan, brother to Irit Jacobson (Jack) and brother-in-law to Morrie and Hilarie Goldman. He loved life, his devoted friends and family, and he will be dearly remembered and missed by all who knew and loved him.

Services were held Friday, November 8th, at Beth El Congregation. Contributions in lieu of flowers are suggested to ARMDI (Israel Red Cross), PMB 335, 10645 N. Tatum Blvd. #200, Phoenix, AZ 85028; or Crisis Nursery, 2334 E. Polk St., Phoenix, AZ 85006. Arrangements by Sinai Mortuary.
