'Gluckel of Hamelin'

Arizona State University's Jewish Studies Program presents free performances of "Gluckel of Hamelin," the story of a young woman living in Hamburg, Germany, in the late 1600s.

Born in 1646 and married at 14, Gluckel gave birth to 12 children before her widowhood at age 44. Drowning in debt, she took on the family business, opened her own factory, traveled to fairs all over central Europe and skillfully arranged her children's marriages. She also took up a pen and for the next 24 years, wrote of her life, her dreams and her beliefs. Her memoir is the only pre-modern Yiddish text written by a woman.

Performances will be held 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, at Beeloes Caf‚, 501 S. Mill Ave., Tempe, and 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, at Beth El Congregation, 1118 W. Glendale Ave., Phoenix. Call Beeloe's at 480-894-1230, or Beth El at 602-944-3359.
