ObituariesNancy AbramsNancy G. Abrams of Solana Beach, Calif., died Oct. 5, 2002. She was 37. She was born in Phoenix and attended Phoenix Hebrew Academy, and graduated from Camelback High School and the University of Arizona. She was a marketing director and a member of the Holocaust Museum, Congregation Beth Am in San Diego and B'nai B'rith.Survivors include her parents, Kenneth and Joy of Phoenix; brothers, David and Michael, both of Phoenix; and grandparents Pearl Rudnick and Flora Abrams, both of Phoenix. Services were held in San Diego, with Rabbi Arthur Zuckerman officiating. Arrangements were by Am Israel. Esther FiremanEsther Fireman of Beverly Hills, Calif., died Oct. 15, 2002. She was 89. She was born in Douglas and lived most of her life in Phoenix and Tempe. She was an analyst for the Employment Security Commission. She was a member of Temple Beth Israel, Temple Emanuel of Tempe and the Phoenix Jewish Historical Society.Survivors include her daughters, Judy of New York, and Janet of Los Angeles; sisters, Lena Gilbert of San Francisco, and Bess Oseran of Tucson. He was born in Romania and moved to Arizona from Michigan in 1993. He was a retired electrical contractor.Survivors include his wife, Judith; sons, Alex of New York, Scot of Plainsboro, N.J., and Joel of Scottsdale; and sisters, Fay Fryd of Phoenix, Raia Chornaya of Herzlya, Israel, and Eva Ontman of Glendale. He was born in Columbus, Ohio, and moved to Arizona from Michigan in 1997. He was a surgeon.Survivors include his wife, Shonnette; sons, Bruce, Charles and Steven; and seven grandchildren. Services were held at the Green Acres Chapel of Light, with Messianic Rabbi Jack Zimmerman officiating. Arrangements were by Green Acres Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to American Diabetes Association, 9034 N. 23rd Ave., Suite 8, Phoenix 85021-2850. Joseph NovakoffJoseph Novakoff of Newton, Mass. passed away on October 17. He was 84. He was the husband of Shirley Rudnick Novakoff and is also survived by his children, Stephen and Fran Novakoff of Paradise Valley, Richard Novakoff of Hopkinton, Mass., and Karen and Mark Susser of Weston, Mass. His three cherished grandchildren are Michael Novakoff, Julie Novakoff, and Sarah Susser. He is also survived by his brother Edward Novakoff of Mashpee, Mass. and Evelyn Silverman of Danville, Va. Mr. Novakoff was loved and respected by his entire family.Born in Boston, Mr. Novakoff graduated from Boston Latin School, class of 1936, and attended Boston University's business and law schools. He was a pioneer in the uniform business and past president of Royal Clothing Company of Boston, a manufacturer of Novakoff Brothers Uniforms. He also founded Seaport by Novakoff, a manufacturer of naval dungarees. Mr. Novakoff was an avid tennis player and as a youth competed in the New England championship semifinals. He played tennis up until several years ago. He was a longtime member of Temple Emanuel of Newton. He was the former treasurer of the Speech and Hearing Foundation of Boston and was actively involved for many years in Israel Bonds. Mr. Novakoff was a frequent visitor to Phoenix.
