Focus on the real issues

DAVID PETERSEN
I recently read an article written by my opponent which attempts to use fear and deception to distort my record that has defined my eight years in the Arizona state senate and my 23 years as a financial services advisor - experience which will define my administration at the state treasurer's office.

I have a record that has focused on cutting taxes, reducing the size of government and fighting to end the overspending that exists within the state's school's facilities board. Just like my opponent, I have deeply held religious beliefs - beliefs that define who my opponent and I are as people, not as candidates for the office of Arizona state treasurer. The real issue here is that my opponent is trying to focus away attention from her lack of any financial investment background. My opponent's plan for the treasurer's office places more money at risk and makes investments with greater risk and within the control of government bureaucrats.

My plan requires the protection of your taxes be paramount by employing the same prudent financial decisions that have defined both my professional and personal life. These are the real issues in this campaign. I will debate my opponent anywhere in this state on the issues that are relevant to the office we are both seeking. But I will not engage in name-calling and religious demagoguery to advance my candidacy. Leadership is about standing up for what is right, so I will never and have never made my opponent's deeply held religious beliefs an issue in this campaign. It is simply not right.

I urge you to visit my Web site at www.petersenfortreasurer.com and join the thousands of Arizonans and people like Sen. John McCain, former Attorney General Grant Woods and former Senate President John Greene in supporting my candidacy for the Arizona state treasurer. When you go the polls on Nov. 5, vote David Petersen for state treasurer; and if you have any further questions about me or my candidacy, please feel free to give me a call at home at 480-827-9554.

Petersen is the Republican candidate for state treasurer. The other candidate is Ruth Solomon, state senator (D-Tucson).
