ObituariesCommunity leader diesJoan S. Roth of Scottsdale died Sept. 28, 2002. She was 66. She was born in Baltimore and moved to Arizona in 1986. She was a public school teacher in Baltimore.Roth was active in the local Jewish community, serving on the boards of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix, Jewish Family and Children's Service and Jewish National Fund. She was also active in the Women's Department of federation. She was a past president of her chapter of Hadassah in Baltimore. Survivors include Sheldon Roth; sons, Joseph, Robert and Jonathan; brother, Robert Smelkinson; and nine grandchildren. A memorial service was held at Temple Beth Israel's Roth Family Chapel. Richard ColeRichard Harlin Cole of Scottsdale died Oct. 10, 2002. He was 69. He was born in Cleveland and moved to Arizona in 1958. He was a manufacturer's representative for children's toys and dolls. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corp.Survivors include his wife, Sharon; sons, Jeffrey of Phoenix, and Steven and Robert, both of Scottsdale; brother, Jerry of Phoenix; and one grandchild. She was born in Chicago and moved to Arizona more than 60 years ago. She was employed by the Phoenix Police Department, Riverside Park Ball Room and Beth Hebrew Synagogue. She was a member of Jewish War Veterans Auxiliary and Veterans of Foreign Wars. She was actively involved in the Theodore Council of the Boy Scouts of America, training future Den Mothers.Survivors include her sons, Robert of Mesa, and Harve and David, both of Phoenix; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Solomon of Phoenix died Oct. 10, 2002. He was 59. He was born in Cleveland and moved to Arizona in 1971. He was a private practice CPA and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was past president of T-Bird Talks Toastmasters.Survivors include his wife, Nina; daughter, Melinda of Phoenix; son, Dan of Tucson; and sister, Annette of Mesa. Flower St., Phoenix 85014. Irving FriedmanIrving Friedman, born 89 years ago in Newburg, N.Y. Irving Friedman passed away peacefully in his sleep in Scottsdale on Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Esther, on Oct. 21, 2001.A guidance counselor and teacher of English and drama in Newark, N.J., Irving was also principal of Hebrew schools in South Orange, N.J. and Milburn, N.J. Summers he worked in Milford, Pa. as the Resident Director of Cedar Lake Camp, one of the New Jersey YM-YWHA camps. Irving and Esther retired to Deerfield Beach, Fla. in 1973. Irving devoted himself to family and to helping others. He co-founded Temple Beth Israel where he led services until a rabbi was hired. He also served as president of his local B'nai B'rith Lodge. A community organizer, Irving co-founded the very successful "We Care" volunteer program in Deerfield Beach, for which he was recognized by and met with President Bill Clinton. He also wrote and produced shows to raise funds for "We Care," Israel Bonds, UJA and other service organizations. Among his many honors were his induction into the Broward County Senior Hall of Fame, "The Israel Freedom Award" and recognition for his achievements in The Congressional Record. Irving and Esther moved to Arizona three and a half years ago. Irving is survived by his son Stuart and his wife Aviah in Phoenix; his son Richard and his wife Harriet in New Jersey; his grandchildren, Ron, David, Saul, Abigail and her husband Noah, Natasha and Rebecca; his great-granddaughter Leah; and his sister Florence Rader and her husband Harold. Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 8th in Beth El Cemetery. Arrangements by Sinai Mortuary. Norman J. FuchsNorman J. Fuchs, age 80, passed away October 12, 2002. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. and moved to the Valley 65 years ago. In 1957 he built and developed Camelback East Shops at 32nd Street and Camelback Road. He was the developer of Paragon Industrial Center, founder of The Norman J. Fuchs Company, the first representative in the U.S. for Panasonic serving the Southwest, creator of Cactus Glassware for Blakely Gas Stations, past president of Beth El Congregation, member of Arizona Jewish Historical Society, and member of Phoenix Pot and Kettle Club. He had a love for life, hiking the Grand Canyon, and loved to see others succeed and will be loved and missed by all.Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Rhoda; son Henry (Vincenza) Fuchs; daughters Sandy (Marvin) Stein and Marsha Playman; brothers Harry Forman and Nathan Fuchs; grandchildren Shari (Andy) Munitz, Jeff and Bradley Fuchs and Mindy Stein; and great-grandchildren Jazz and Melody Munitz. Roth passed away suddenly in Scottsdale on Tuesday, October 8, 2002. Beloved wife of the late Samuel B. Roth. Mother of Becky and Michael Markowitz of Washington Crossing, Pa., Myra and Don Faust of Maple Grove, Minn., and the late Meyer S.G. Roth. Grandmother of Benjamin Max Markowitz, Louis Brandon Markowitz, Lucas Glosser Faust and Sam William Faust.Louise was born in Altoona, Pa., on July 21, 1932. She graduated from Westmont High School in Johnstown, Pa. and attended Temple University. While living in Pittsburgh, she was an active member of Rodef Shalom Temple, volunteered in the pre-school at the JCC, and was active in the UJF and Israel Bonds. She was always involved in community programs. After relocating to Scottsdale, she became a member of Temple Solel. She was dedicated to being healthy and fit, working out almost every day. She was an active member of a seniors group, loved to travel and loved being with family. Louise was a shining star who always lived life to the fullest, and her positive attitude and smile will be missed by all her friends and family. Services and interment will be held in Pittsburgh.
