The community is invited to attend a dedication ceremony for the Ina Levine Jewish Community Campus followed by the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix's 61st annual meeting at 8:45 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 27.
A brief dedication ceremony will be held at the main entrance to the campus and a mezuzah will be affixed to the front door.
The theme of federation's annual meeting is "Together at this time, at this place, at this moment in our history." The event will honor Vicki Cabot, newly elected president of federation, and Lanny Lahr, immediate past president.
Four additional awards will be presented to community members and organizations.
The Medal of Honor will be presented to Judy Ackerman for her long-time dedication to the community. The Medal of Honor is awarded by a committee of past award recipients.
"We met and unanimously selected Judy to receive the Medal of Honor for this year. She's an outstanding candidate. She's been in our community since 1975 (and) ... she's been involved in every aspect of federation and the community-at-large," said Michael Greenbaum, committee chairman and last year's recipient of the award.
The Sy Clark Young Leadership Award will be awarded to Philip Sheinbein, and Audrey Zuckerman will receive the Lee Amada Young Leadership Award for their active participation in federation and the Jewish community.
"It's wonderful to see young dedicated people who have such a terrific sense of Jewish community and values and needs. It's wonderful that they've been involved in the past and it's certainly our hope that they'll continue to remain involved," said Heath Blumstein, senior campaign associate at federation and a member of the award committee.
The Belle Latchman Community Service Award will be presented to three local organizations, Kivel Campus of Care, The King David School and the Phoenix Hebrew Academy for their joint "Dor L'Dor: Connecting the Generations" program.
"The Latchman Award is given in recognition of outstanding current contributions to the enhancement of the quality of life in the Greater Phoenix Jewish community," said Sara Ziskin, chairwoman of the award committee. "The committee felt this program epitomized the concept of the cooperative effort between agencies and organizations to create a whole that was greater than its individual parts."
The program, initiated last fall, sends residents of the independent living apartments at Kivel Campus of Care to volunteer in the two Valley day schools once a week.
"It's really been a tremendous program. It has been so inspirational and motivating to (the seniors) to get up and have something to look forward to," said Hank Arens, director of community services for Kivel.
A continental breakfast will be served at the annual meeting to be held 9-11 a.m., at the campus, 12701 N. Scottsdale Road. Reservations are required by Wednesday Oct. 16: 480-634-4900, ext. 1180 or online at www.jewishphoenix.org.
