The Tri-City Jewish Community Center Day School has hired a new director.

Sharon Shelton, an East Valley resident for more than 20 years, will be heading the four-year-old school that serves students in grades one through four.

Shelton is a former Kyrene School District teacher and previously served as the preschool director at the Valley of the Sun Jewish Community Center when it was located on Maryland Avenue in Phoenix. After working in education for many years, Shelton went on to work in the private sector as a trainer for both Intel and the Arizona Republic. She said that she's always looked forward to returning to education.

"My master's degree is in educational leadership and so I've always wanted to be a principal, but until my children got older, I couldn't commit the time," she said.

Shelton has two daughters, Jacquelyn, 16, a student at Desert Vista High School; and Randi, 11, a student at Akimel A-Al Middle School. The family resides in Tempe and belongs to Temple Emanuel.

Shelton said she is excited to be working with a school that offers a strong Judaic and secular curriculum.

"It's a great community day school," she said. "We want to make all Jewish kids feel comfortable here. ... We want to make sure we're really serving the East Valley."
