Art Paikowsky has resigned as executive vice president of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix, effective Oct. 1.
After more than five years heading the organization, Paikowsky is moving on to pursue new challenges.
"It's time to move in a different direction, and I'm working on some other things that I'm very excited about - that I'll be doing on a consulting basis - that will keep me in the community," said Paikowsky.
During his tenure at federation, Paikowsky was instrumental in the creation of the new Ina Levine Jewish Community Campus. He said he is proud that he "could bring some things together that resulted in the development of this campus model - the successful fund raising that we did, the construction that's now completed and the fact that we're on budget. We built a building without any debt, (and that) is something I'm very proud of. In the world of fund-raising, it's a life achievement."
Vicki Cabot, newly elected federation president, said that in addition to spearheading the campus fund-raising campaign, Paikowsky helped bring in new donors and raise money to support Israel.
"We are grateful for Art's accomplishments in his years of service to the federation," she said.
A transition team - comprised of federation staff and lay leaders - has been formed to ease the process of Paikowsky's departure.
The next step, Cabot said, is to appoint a committee to conduct a nationwide search for a replacement for Paikowsky, a process that could take four to six months.
"It's a difficult time for the community, but it's also an opportunity," said Cabot. "It forces us to really sit down and evaluate who we are and what we need and where we want to go. Part of that is in the kind of leadership we have."
