Retha Silby Bodney

Retha Silby Bodney of Surprise, formerly of Kansas City, Mo., passed away peacefully September 30, 2002. A memorial service was held on Wednesday, October 2, 2002 at Temple B'nai Jehudah in Kansas City.

Retha was born November 29, 1919 in Montreal, Canada. She grew up in Kansas City and graduated from Westport High School and the Kansas City Junior College, earning a degree as a certified medical technologist. She worked briefly as a medical technologist in Junction City, Kan., and later at Kansas University Medical Center.

Retha married Daniel F. Bodney in 1941 and celebrated 54 years as a loving, devoted wife, care-giving companion, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Since her beloved husband passed away in 1995, she welcomed the challenge of "being on her own." Her strong spirit and sense of humor made her many friends over the years. She did not want her friends and family to grieve her passing, but to celebrate the fun times they shared together.

Retha was preceded in death by her son, Steven E. Bodney, in 1966. She is survived by her three sons, Howard E. Bodney, J. Victor Bodney and David J. Bodney; daughters-in-law Mary and Sarah; grandchildren J. Max Bodney, Stephanie G. Levine, Karen N. Bodney, Christian S. Bodney, Anna Bodney and Daniel Bodney; great-grandchildren Sydney Levine and Noah I. Levine; a sister, Bertha Binder; and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Hospice of the Valley or your favorite charity.
