ObituariesKivel founder, director diesEugene D. Berlatsky of Phoenix died Sept. 12, 2002. He was 83. He was born in Minneapolis and moved to Arizona in 1964 from Seattle. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in the South Pacific in World War II.He was the founder and former executive director of Kivel Geriatric Center. He also founded the Arizona Bicycle Club in 1964 and was instrumental in the establishment of many Phoenix bike paths, including the Sonoran Bikeway, which is dedicated to him. He was a member of Beth El Congregation. Survivors include his wife, Sylvia; and daughters, Rachel Kaplan of Glendale, Calif., and Diana Cottier of Covington, La. Services were held at Sinai Mortuary Chapel, with Rabbi Moshe Tutnauer officiating. Arrangements were by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to Beth El Congregation, 1118 W. She was born in Toledo, Ohio, and moved to Arizona from New Mexico in 1961. She was a homemaker. She was a member of United Order of True Sisters, Beth El Congregation and B'nai Israel of Albuquerque.Survivors include daughters, Sylvia Coffe of Albuquerque, N.M., and Laura of Campbell, Calif.; son, Barry of Scottsdale; sister, Sally Feldman of Michigan; brothers, Sy Abrams of New Jersey, and Cecil Abramovitz of California; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was born in Chicago and moved to Arizona in 1967. He was a retired orthopedic surgeon.Survivors include his wife, Ursula of Parks; daughters, Amy and Jill, both of Phoenix, Sharon Bassell, Deborah Mitchell, and Ashley of Parks; sister, Muriel Harris; and five grandchildren. Services were held at Sinai Mortuary Chapel, with Rabbi Albert Plotkin officiating. Arrangements were by Sinai Mortuary. Freda LevineFreda Levine of Scottsdale died Sept. 13, 2002. She was 85. She was born in Minneapolis and moved to Arizona in 1985. She was the retired owner and operator of a steel business.Survivors include her daughter, Elaine Berman of Cincinnati; son, Larry of Tucson; sister, Mona Tipper of Redwood City, Calif.; brother, Norton Glass of Minneapolis; and two grandchildren. Thomas Road, Phoenix 85016. Betty GlazovBetty Glazov of Phoenix died Sept. 13, 2002. She was 84. She was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and moved to Arizona nine years ago from California. She was a saleswoman in the retail clothing industry.Survivors include her daughter, Gloria Joseph of Fort Meyers, Fla.; son, Jerry of Phoenix; sisters, Eva Harris of Chicago, and Ida Chandler and Rochelle Dunevitz, both of Denver; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Services were held in Los Angeles. Arrangements were by Sinai Mortuary. Clifford SpiegelClifford Jay Spiegel of Windsor, Ontario, died Aug. 20, 2002. He was 53. He was born in Boston and was a former resident of Phoenix. He was a sound and lighting engineer.Survivors include his mother, Constance Korn of San Diego; and sister, Laura of San Diego. Goldsmith, age 65, passed away September 17, 2002 in Phoenix after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Chicago and moved to the Valley 37 years ago. She had a bachelor's degree in education and taught until she began her family. She was a devoted daughter, sister, mother and grandmother. She volunteered for the Girl Scouts, the Juvenile Diabetes Association, the Heard Museum and many local charities. Her children and grandchildren were the light of her life. Her loving memory will live on forever in the hearts of her family and friends.Survivors include her children Sharon (Donald) Bassell, Deborah (Joseph) Mitchell, Jill S. Goldsmith and Amy M. Goldsmith; mother Ann Friedlander; brother Daniel (Shirley) Friedlander; and grandchildren Nicole, Rebeccah, Rachel, Hailey and Samantha. Funeral services will be held Friday, September 20th at 12:00 p.m. in Sinai Mortuary Chapel, 4538 N. 16th St., in Phoenix.
