New group hits Jewish social scene

There's something new on the Jewish social scene for young adults.

SCENE - an acronym for Social & Community Events for Networking, Exclusively for young Jewish adults was developed by local businessman Jeff Geller and will sponsor its first happy hour 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, at Six, 7316 E. Stetson Drive, Scottsdale.

"After talking to many friends in various cities, I discovered that, compared to most other metropolitan regions, the Phoenix area was lacking in Jewish organizations that focused on social functions," Geller said. "I wanted to create an environment where young Jewish people could come together."

Plans include regular happy hours and two major parties, such as a Purim costume party and a black-tie New Year's Eve party near Rosh Hashana.

"For both of these events, the weather in Arizona is ideal and there currently aren't any fun-themed parties," Geller said. "I hope that both of these parties become monumental social events where people from all over Arizona look forward to attending the next one."

In addition to providing a social network for Jewish young adults ages 23-40, Geller is interested in promoting Jewish-owned businesses on the group's Web site, partly in response to Phoenix's transient population.

"People are always moving in and out of the state," Geller said. "If a Jewish directory would help someone build a business in the area, then it will help them plant roots here."

Other organizations Geller has been involved with include the education/outreach committee of the Young Leadership Division of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix, the Scottsdale 20-30 club, Friends of COMPAS and Celebrity Fight Night.

"I wanted to combine the best parts of all these groups into a new organization to benefit (those who) do not have the flexibility to be part of various organizations," Geller said. "This organization isn't going to replace other community outreach programs. It is dedicated to (help Jewish people) meet, socialize and network with other Jewish people."
