Obituaries

Betty Levy

Betty M. Levy of Phoenix died Aug. 5, 2002. She was 85. She was born in Chicago and moved to Arizona in 1980. She was a retired secretary for a community college.

Survivors include her daughters, Suzanne Aamann of Phoenix and Nancy of Boston; and four grandchildren.

Services were held in Illinois. Arrangements were by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to American Cancer Society, 2929 E. Thomas Road, Phoenix 85016; or American Heart Association, 2929 S. 48th St., Tempe 85282.



Bernice Goldfarb

Bernice Goldfarb of Phoenix died Aug. 3, 2002. She was 77. She was born in Detroit. She was a WAC in World War II, stationed in New Guinea,

Survivors include her husband, Arthur; daughter, Sheryl of Poway, Calif.; son, Saul of Rio Del, Calif.; sister, Eleanore Demak of Jamesburg, N.J.; brother, Albert Yendick of Livonia, Mich.; and two grandchildren.

Services were held at Maryvale Mortuary Chapel, with Cantor Lori Frank officiating. Arrangements were by Maryvale Mortuary.



Dr. Eugene J. Jaffe

Dr. Eugene J. Jaffe, 78, of Scottsdale, beloved husband, father, Zayde, brother, uncle and friend, passed away August 6, 2002. He was born in Chicago and moved to Arizona in 1988.

He was born on March 6, 1924, to the late Dora and Dr. Harry Jaffe. During his childhood, he was a competitive diver and Eagle Scout. He proudly served in the United States Air Force during World War II. After graduating from Loyola University Dental School in 1946, he began a long and distinguished career as an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon until his retirement in 1988. During his professional career, he taught at Cook County and Michael Reese Hospital and was inducted into the International College of Dentistry and the Fellowship of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

An avid runner, he ran the Boston Marathon several times and won numerous medals from running races. He loved sports and was a Chicago Bears, Cubs and Bulls fan. Upon retirement, he enjoyed the art of painting and sharing his interests and passions with his grandchildren. He was a man of compassion and integrity with an exceptional sense of humor and an unending love for his family. He touched many lives and will be greatly missed by those who had the privilege of knowing him.

He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter Julie Beth Jaffe. Eugene is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Adelyne (Marshak); three daughters, Sally Kootman (Jeffrey) of Paradise Valley, Patti Jaffe of Tucson and Francine Pine (Jeffrey) of Highland Park, Ill.; five grandchildren, Adam, Amy, Maddie, Marni and Allie; and sister, Jacquie Coleman (Allan) of Highland Park.

Funeral services were held. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the National Alzheimer's Research Center, 640 Jackson Street, St. Paul, MN 55101, (800) 229-2872. Arrangements by Sinai Mortuary.



Al Schwartz

Al Schwartz, 83, passed away August 9, 2002 in Phoenix. He was born in Manhattan and has been a Phoenix resident for the past 48 years.

He was a CPA and in 1960 founded an accounting practice in Phoenix which became known as Schwartz Cohen and Company CPAs. He was a member of Beth El Congregation and a veteran of WWII serving with the Army Air Corps. in the South Pacific Theatre of War.

Survivors include his sons, Mark (Cecille) Schwartz and Ethan (Winkie) Schwartz; daughter Wendy (Wayne) Laskin; sister Gussie Scher; grandchildren Jeremy, Tova, Kai, Zina Schwartz, Matthew and Asher Laskin and Tisha Castillo; great-grandchildren Breanna and Elias Castillo.

Funeral services were held Sunday, August 11, 2002 at Sinai Mortuary Chapel in Phoenix. The family requests contributions to Shirley and Al's Passover Pantry Endowment, c/o Temple Chai, 4645 E. Marilyn Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85032. Contributions shall be used to provide food community wide for Passover to families in need.
