Hadassah starts unit in northern AZ

High in the pines of Flagstaff, a group of Jewish women met July 14 to form the first northern Arizona unit of Hadassah.

Seven women in their 20s to 50s attended the meeting with Lisa Blumstein, national Hadassah membership specialist, and plan to hold a second meeting Aug. 5 and organize a steering committee.

"They're really gung-ho, ready to go," Blumstein said. "With some groups, it takes six months to get to the point where they're at."

The unit was formed "because there is such a need for them to connect with the Jewish community," she said.

Susan Sterman, who moved to Flagstaff from Brooklyn, N.Y., eight years ago, said she's "really looking forward to meeting other Jewish women in town." Other than Heichal Baoranim, there are no Jewish organizations in Flagstaff, Sterman said. "I haven't really been involved in anything other than just doing the holidays at home."

Hadassah has 2,500 members in Maricopa County and 1,000 in Tucson, Blumstein said.

On its mailing list, Hadassah has several women from the Prescott Valley and Sedona areas and Blumstein said she hopes to reach out to those communities next.

"I think (Hadassah is) a real good opportunity for Jewish women to give to their communities," Sterman said. "No matter where their communities are."
