Vouchers harm church-state separation

Editor:
A letter to the editor was critical of Jewish News Editor Barry Cohen's position on school vouchers. ("Just say no to public education?" Jewish News, July 12) Cohen believes that the U.S. Supreme Court was mistaken, in a 5 to 4 decision, in declaring that public funds could constitutionally go to religious schools. He is concerned that public schools would suffer. Cohen, in my opinion, is absolutely correct in his assumption.

It is clear by now that the Supreme Court is ruled by political considerations, rather than constitutional ones. How unfortunate. Separation of church and state - which has served this country, especially minorities, so well - is now falling by the wayside. Those Jewish groups who are happy to have tax money for their religious schools are endangering their heritage for a bowl of porridge. Blurring the lines between religion and government is a slippery slope which can only harm Jewish interests.

A call for consistency

Editor:
The Palestinians cannot have both terror and peace. There are 22 Arab dictatorships in the Middle East with 99.8 percent of the land. The Palestinians should move to the countries they favor - Saudi Arabia, which collects money for them after terrorists kill and maim innocent civilians, and Iraq.

The Jewish people were thrown out of all Arab countries after the 1948 war. Thereafter, they suffered attacks in 1956, 1967 and 1973. The Israelis defeated the Arabs against all odds and won the West Bank and Gaza and Golan Heights. They did not take this land because the Arabs offered them peace.

The Jews have suffered Diasporas for thousands of years. Now the terrorist Palestinians who support a dictator and father of all terrorism, Yasser Arafat, should be expelled from all of Israel to the countries they applaud.

There cannot be a double standard in this world. Great Britain asserts its rights in Ireland. Israel is now asserting its rights to land won when attacked. Israel needs borders as the Jordan River and Mediterranean Sea.
