Just say no to public education?

Editor:
In his idealistic commentary "Just say 'no' to vouchers," (Jewish News, July 5), Barry Cohen fails to recognize the frustration many parents feel when confronted with a self-righteous monopoly like our public school system. The primary function of schools is academic education. Cultural diversity is not a substitute for that education and can be readily acquired through extra-curricular activities and social functions.

The disastrous results of failing to apply academic standards in our public schools is demonstrated by the often superior academic knowledge of foreign students and the general illiteracy of personnel at checkout counters.

I worked for AT&T for many years when our telephone system was under the leadership of the Bell System, which brooked no deviation from its self-determined rules and regulations in its operational bureaucracy. I doubt whether our present telecommunication system could have evolved if the breakup of AT&T had not occurred.

Our schools are now at similar crossroads. Should we evoke old times by maintaining the shibboleths of yore?
