Raw Kaballah receives grants

Raw Kaballah, a Shabbat program for Jewish young adults, received $30,000 in grants in May, which will help the program continue for another year.

Two grants, $15,000 each, were received from the local Jewish Community Foundation and the Chicago-based STAR Foundation, said Jeffrey Frankel, Raw Kaballah administrator. The STAR Challenge Grant was a matching grant from the STAR Foundation - Synagogue Transformation and Renewal - a national partnership founded by philanthropists Charles Schusterman, Edgar Bronfman and Michael Steinhardt.

Each Raw Kaballah service, which draws approximately 200-450 participants, costs about $3,500 to produce, Frankel said. Costs include food, dance instruction, advertising and the Los Angeles-based band Milot Ha'nefesh. Private donors will be approached for additional funds, Frankel said.

Raw Kaballah community Friday night services, geared toward Jewish young adults, were held monthly at Beth El Congregation in Phoenix from October 2001-June 2002. The monthly service, held on the first Friday of each month, will resume on Oct. 4, alternating between Beth El and Temple Chai in Phoenix, Frankel said. Rabbi Peter Levi of Temple Chai will serve as the Raw Kaballah rabbi.

A new summer program, Raw Havdallah, aimed at the same demographic, will premiere 8:15 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at Beth El Congregation, 1118 W. Glendale Ave., Phoenix. Cantor Marc Philippe of Beth El will lead the Havadallah ceremony. Future Raw Havdallah programs will be held Aug. 10 and Sept. 14. Call 602-944-3359.
