'Whitewash' report

Editor:
The "whitewash" by the State Department ("Terror report a 'whitewash,' " Jewish News, May 24) was more extensive than noted. Somehow, the State Department's report, "Patterns of Global Terrorism," observed that Israel's destruction of the Palestinian Authority's security infrastructure contributed to the ineffectiveness of the PA by significantly reducing Israeli-PA security cooperation while allowing this terrorist infrastructure to be rebuilt. They forgot that this Israeli action reduced communication capabilities between the various terrorist groups, as well as between the terrorist leaders and perpetrators.

The Israeli government listed 29 pages of terrorist incidents, including both successful and thwarted bombers, vehicular snipers and rock-throwers resulting in maiming and/or deaths. An attack against a non-combatant is a terrorist attack, whether the targeted victims are killed or not. A car transporting a suicide bomber or an individual loaded with bombs - identified and, in either instance, thwarted before achieving their goal - are still acts of "terror." This places our State Department's veracity in great jeopardy.

Foundation funds summer campers

Editor:
On behalf of the board of the Jewish Community Foundation, let me commend you on your article, "Spiritual Summers: Survey Shows Jewish camp strengthens Judaism" (Jewish News, May 17). The foundation supports the research that documents the lifelong benefits reaped from attending Jewish summer camp. We are fortunate to be able to distribute scholarships to day and overnight Jewish summer camps from the following designated funds:
  • Jack S. Bromfield Camp Endowment Fund
  • Ken Maltenfort Memorial Endowment Fund
  • Labe Eric Targovnik Scholarship Fund
This year the foundation distributed $12,800 in stipends to 10 different camps, including Camp Charles Pearlstein, the Tri-City Jewish Community Center, Valley of the Sun JCC and Hess Kramer Camp in Los Angeles, which enabled 33 children the opportunity to attend camp.

Contributions can be made to these funds in any amount. For additional information on camp scholarships or how you can create an endowment fund, please contact the Jewish Community Foundation at 602-274-1800, ext. 140. We are pleased to be able to help enrich a child's summer and strengthen his or her bonds to Judaism and Klal Yisrael through a summer camp experience.
