Theater presents adaptation of Shakespeare for children

William Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night," adapted specifically for young audiences, will be performed by the Arizona Jewish Theatre Company's children's division, Curtain Call, May 15-19 at The Playhouse on the Park, Viad Corporate Center, 1850 N. Central Ave., Phoenix. The play was adapted by Cass Foster, the chairman of the Theatre Department of Central Arizona College in Coolidge. Alison Ganssle directs. Show times are 7 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday; 2 p.m. Sunday.

Student masterpieces

An exhibit of student artwork and a silent auction presented by the Phoenix Hebrew Academy PTA will be held 4-7 p.m. Sunday, May 19, at the Phoenix Hebrew Academy, 515 E. Bethany Home Road. The evening, for adults only, includes wine, cheese and other refreshments.

Cost is $10 individual; $18 couple.

'Holocaust' concert

The Dobson High School Symphonic Band will perform "Suite from 'Holo- caust' " at 7 p.m. Thurs- day, May 16, in the high school's auditorium, 1501 W. Guadalupe Road, Mesa.

The six-movement work by Morton Gould was originally commissioned for the Arizona State University Symphonic Band. The students have not only rehearsed the music, but have also explored the historical and human background of the Holocaust, said Dobson Conductor Jon. A. Gomez. The concert is free. Beth El installs cantor

Beth El Congregation will officially install Cantor Marc Philippe with a "Celebration of Music" concert 7 p.m. Sunday, May 19, at the synagogue, 1118 W. Glendale Ave., Phoenix.

Paris-born Philippe, who serves both as the synagogue's cantor and Talmud Torah director, is also a flutist and conductor. Vocalist Alyssa Landry of Paris will join him in the concert, which will feature music ranging from Broadway and traditional to new Jewish and Israeli pieces. The concert will also feature Cantor Dvorah Buhr of New York, representing the Cantors Assembly.

A dessert reception follows the concert.

Cheryl Hammerman, regional vice president for United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism will be the installing officer at the concert.
