Let's teach children truth about Middle East

Editor:
Your commentary, "Preparing our children" (Jewish News, April 19), will be hanging on my classroom wall. I have taught Sunday school for many years, and I agree that we must teach our children to dispel any media myths about Israel. A teacher can provide more positive images. For example, whenever Arab leaders are shown, they are shown in lands that are desolate. When pictures of Israel are presented, there are images of vibrant hospitals and schools. In addition, the media incorrectly labels Israel "the occupier." The Palestinians are squatters on our land since their Arab brothers would not take care of them.

We may all be Semitic, as I am often told, but we do not pay money to families so their children will strap on bombs and become murderers. We do not celebrate in the streets when a life is lost.

The tragedy would be to remain impotent and not effectively stand up for Israel. We must not allow a narrow view of our own world make diminutive our very existence. The current anti-Semitic environment underscores the fact that an attack on the Promised Land creates a very dangerous world for all.
