'Mr. Green' visits Phoenix, Tucson

The co-production of "Visiting Mr. Green" by Phoenix's Arizona Jewish Theatre Company (AJTC) and Tucson's Invisible Theatre represents the first time two Arizona theaters have co-produced a theatrical production.

The play opened March 19 in Tucson and runs April 20-May 5 at the Playhouse on the Park, 1850 N. Central Ave., Phoenix. The play, written by Jeff Baron, tells the story of two men from different worlds and different generations who are forced together and eventually find common ground. Green, an elderly widower, wanders into traffic on New York's Upper West Side. He's nearly hit by a car driven by Ross Gardiner, a young corporate executive. Gardiner is charged with reckless driving and receives a community service sentence of helping Green once a week for six months. The plot unfolds in a series of visits in Green's apartment. Susan Claassen, managing artistic director of Invisible Theatre, directs the play for both theaters.

Partial funding for this project has been provided for the Phoenix production by the Phoenix Arts Commission and the Arizona Commission on the Arts and for the Tucson production by the Tucson/Pima Arts Council and Mary A. Goodman. Show times are 8 p.m. Thursday-Saturday; 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $25-$27. Call 602-264-0402.
