Obituaries

Barbara Carol Bentley

Barbara Carol Bentley, known to most people as "Bobbie," passed away on March 13 after a long illness. Bobbie lived in Phoenix for forty years and was a dedicated teacher with a great love of children and the arts. She is survived by her children Cathy Zaitzow, Caren Danielson, Burton Bentley II, and four grandchildren. A private service was held in Tucson.

A memorial celebration is planned for March 30, at 2:00, in the Children's Gallery at the Phoenix Art Museum, where Bobbie served as a docent for 30 years. In Bobbie's honor, donations can be made to the Phoenix Art Museum at 1625 North Central Avenue, Phoenix, 85004.



Harriet Cohen

Harriet Cohen of Scottsdale died March 20, 2002. She was 84. She was born in Dubuque, Iowa, and moved to Arizona from Michigan in 1960. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Fred; daughters, Susie Gottfurcht of Bell Canyon, Calif., Carol Ann Irvin of Los Angeles, and Sandy Jarred of Phoenix; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held at Sinai Mortuary Chapel. Arrangements were by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to American Diabetes Association, 8125 N. 23rd Ave., #222, Phoenix 85021; or Temple Chai, 4645 E. Marilyn Road, Phoenix 85032.



Anna Nankin

Anna Nankin of Cheshire, Conn., died March 19, 2002. She was 96.

Survivors include her sons, Richard of Scottsdale, and James of Cheshire; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services were held in Connecticut. Arrangements were by Robert E. Shure, Inc. Funeral Home. Contributions are suggested to Hospice & Pallative Care of CT, 33 N. Plains Industrial Road, Wallingford, CT 06492.



Fred Shindell

Fred Edward Shindell of Phoenix died March 22, 2002. He was 82. He was born in Baltimore, Md., and moved to Arizona from Connecticut in 1958. He was a retired owner of a plastics company. He served as a U.S. Army captain in the European Theatre in World War II. He was awarded the Bronze Medal and the Purple Heart.

Survivors include his wife, Sylvia; daughter, Laurel; sons, Richard, David and Steven; sister, Estelle Weiss; brother, Sidney; and 10 grandchildren.

Services were held at Beth Israel Cemetery, with Rabbi David Pinkwasser officiating. Arrangements were by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to Phoenix Children's Hospital, 111 E. McDowell Road, Phoenix 85006; or The Children's Health Center of St. Joseph's Hospital, 350 W. Thomas Road, Phoenix 85001.



Bella Simons

Bella Simons of Scottsdale died March 17, 2002. She was 85. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and moved to Arizona in 1974. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of B'nai B'rith National Council of Jewish Women, Temple Israel Sisterhood in Akron, Ohio, and a volunteer at Scottsdale Center for the Arts.

Survivors include her daughter, Donna Perline of Wichita, Kan.; and sons, Steven of Wellesley, Mass., and Ross of Alexandria, Va.

Arrangements were by Mesa Heritage Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to Senior Adult Program at Scottsdale Community College, Bella Simons Memorial Fund, 9000 E. Chaparral Road, Scottsdale 85256.



Robert Simonson

Robert Simonson of Paradise Valley, age 88, passed away March 23, 2002 in Scottsdale. He was born in Coney Island, N.Y. and moved to the Valley in 1971 from Franklin, N.J. He was a retired Real Estate Investor. He was an Army veteran of WWII serving in the European and Pacific Theatre of War. He is survived by his wife Eleanor, sons Michael (Cynthia) Simonson and Richard (Leanne) Simonson, and two grandchildren, Paul and Tova. Funeral services were held Monday, March 25th in Sinai Mortuary Chapel in Phoenix. Contributions in his memory are suggested to Volunteers Plus c/o Wolfe Residence, 9415 E.
