Obituaries

Murray Shapiro

Murray Shapiro of Glendale died March 8, 2002. He was 66. He was born in Palestine and moved to Arizona from Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1974. He was a retired technician and a U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Naomi; daughters, Barbara Coville and Marilyn Bascelli, both of Phoenix; brother, Jerry of Palm City, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

Services were held at Sinai Mortuary Chapel. Arrangements were by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to Arizona Kidney Foundation, 4203 E. Indian School Road, #140, Phoenix 85018; or American Heart Association, 2929 S. 48th St., Tempe 85282.



Raymond Yost

Raymond Yost of Phoenix died March 6, 2002. He was 83. He was born in Detroit and moved to Arizona from 1986. He was a retired union negotiator for Chrysler Corporation. He served in the U.S. Army, and was a prisoner of war in Germany during World War II.

Survivors include his sister, Helen Rosenheck of Phoenix.

Services were held at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona. Arrangements were by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to Veterans of Foreign Wars, 6907 E. Thomas Road, Scottsdale 85251; or American Cancer Society, 2929 E. Thomas Road, Scottsdale 85016.



Samuel New

Samuel New passed away Tuesday, March 5, 2002 at his home in Scottsdale. Sam was born September 12, 1921 in South Bend, Ind. to Molly and David New. He grew up in South Bend and moved to Elkhart, Ind. shortly after marrying Joan Breskin on December 15, 1946. Since 1973, Sam and Joan enjoyed winters in Scottsdale. Sam is survived by his wife, Joan; his sister Helen Landau (Herman), Louisville, Ky.; his children: Barbara Anshell (Jos), Scottsdale; Phyllis New, Scottsdale; Jeffrey New (llene), Granger, Ind.; and his eight grandchildren: Jeremy Anshell, Nathan Goldberg and Betsy Goldberg, Scottsdale; Adam Anshell, Atlanta; Adrienne Kurland (Brett), Chicago; Daniel, Seth and Jordan New, Granger.

Sam is a graduate of South Bend Central High School and Indiana University Bloomington (1943, Accounting), where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Mu Fraternity. During World War II, Sam served in the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant on the U.S.S. Anthony in the Pacific theater. In 1947, Sam cofounded Mid-City Supply Co., Inc., Elkhart, with Melvin Cohn. After 38 successful years, Sam retired in 1985. Sam also served as the Secretary-Treasurer of Bristol Corporation of Bristol, Ind., retiring from that position in 1984. For 15 years, he was a respected Board member for St. Joseph Valley Bank & Midwest Commerce Bank.

Sam was a very philanthropic man and led by example. He was Chairman of the Elkhart Housing Authority for 15 years and a benefactor and Board Member of the Indiana University Jewish Studies Program. Sam was, at various times, President of Temple Israel, Elkhart Rotary Club and Michiana Credit Management Association. He served as a Board member for the following organizations: United Way of Elkhart County, Better Business Bureau, Greater Elkhart Area Chamber of Commerce, Elcona Country Club, Jewish Federation of St. Joseph Valley, Sinai Synagogue, Temple Israel, Elkhart Rotary Club, and North American Heating, Refrigeration, Air Conditioning Wholesalers Association.

Sam was an accomplished and avid golfer. He was extremely proud of his two holes in one at Elcona Country Club. He enjoyed flying and earned his private pilot's license in 1974. Sam was a kind, generous and gentle man with a quick, dry wit. His humor and love will always be celebrated by his family and friends. Donations may be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Funeral services and interment were held in South Bend on Friday, March 8, 2002. Local arrangements by Sinai Mortuary.



Liese Lotte Eckstein

Liese Lotte Eckstein, 93, died March 12, 2002, at Friendship Village in Tempe.

Mrs. Eckstein was born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, on Nov. 21, 1908. She studied languages at the UniversitŽ de Paris-Sorbonne, and came to the United States with her husband, the late Albert Eckstein, in 1936. She moved to Phoenix with her family from Fort Benning, Ga., in 1944.

She worked as a medical office manager, translator and homemaker. She was a member of Hadassah and a volunteer at Kivel Geriatric Center.

Her immediate survivors are son Paul and daughter-in-law Flo; son John and daughter-in-law Diane; brother Otto Bendheim and sister-in-law Ronnie, all of Phoenix. Also surviving are four grandchildren: Michael Eckstein, Tim Eckstein and Jennifer Eckstein, all of Phoenix; and Katherine Eckstein of New York City.

Other survivors include many cousins, nieces and nephews and friends.

Family graveside services were held Thursday, March 14, at Temple Beth Israel Cemetery. Rabbi Barry Cohen officiated. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary.

Richard Harold Goldstein

Richard Harold Goldstein, 84, of Scottsdale passed away on March 7, 2002. Born in Parkersburg, West Virginia on October 20, 1917, he moved to Arizona from Chevy Chase, Maryland in 1986. He was a graduate of Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia and of the University of Maryland Dental School. He served in the U.S. Army Dental Corps in WWII and afterwards in the Army Reserves. Dr. Goldstein was a past president of the Montgomery County University of Maryland Alumni Association.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Betty Goldstein of Scottsdale, loving daughters Frances Novakoff of Paradise Valley and Barbara Smith of Raleigh, North Carolina; and son-in-law Stephen Novakoff of Paradise Valley, with whom he had a special and close relationship. His grandchildren and most precious legacy are Michael and Julie Novakoff of Paradise Valley and Shane and Jenna Smith of Raleigh.

His gentle, loving manner, strong sense of family and warm smile will always be remembered and cherished. Contributions may be made to Temple Chai, 4645 E. Esther Chalpin

Esther Chalpin, age 71, passed away March 9th, 2002 in Phoenix. She moved to the Valley in 1970 from New York.

She was a past member of ORT and Hadassah. Esther is survived by her son Mitch (Celeste) Chalpin of Paradise Valley; sister Pauline of Queens, N.Y.; and two grandchildren, Hannah and Sydney Chalpin.

Bertram M. "Bert" Harrison

Bertram M. "Bert" Harrison, 82, formerly of Youngstown, Ohio, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 10, 2002 at his residence in Scottsdale.

Born in Youngstown to Max and Laura Brody Harrison, he graduated in 1938 from the Rayen School and earned a degree in business from Youngstown College in 1942. He was a businessman and owned the Camera Mart in New Castle, Pa. until he retired in 1983. He moved to Scottsdale in 1987 from St. Petersburg, Fla.

He is survived by his wife of over 56 years, Myriam "Mickey"; two daughters, Ruth Cohen (William) of Scottsdale and Dede Strombotne (Clinton) of Cary, N.C.; and three grandchildren, Eric Cohen, Kiersten and Spencer Strombotne.
