Arizona Adventurers meets for Frisbee and fun

On the East Coast, people layered their clothing and donned scarves, hats and gloves before venturing outside on March 3. On the same day, Arizona Adventurers met at Phoenix's Arcadia Park wearing shorts and T-shirts to work up a sweat playing Ultimate Frisbee.

The group, founded in 1988, is best described as a "volunteer Jewish outdoor club," says Lionel Hummel, Arizona Adventurers coordinator.

"We're one of the more popular things available for the young Jewish crowd," he remarks.

Its 100 paid members plan the group's events, such as softball, hiking, skiing, biking and volleyball - in addition to Ultimate Frisbee. There are also occasional social events, says Hummel, such as this year's "Hametz Hour" at the end of Passover. About 500-600 Jewish young adults receive its weekly e-mail newsletter.

This weekend includes a hike at Picacho Peak on Saturday, March 16 - a joint activity with Kol B'Yachad, a Tucson social group, he says.

Arizona Adventurers will play softball 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Sunday, March 17, at Horizon Park, at 92nd Street between Frank Lloyd Wright and Thompson Peak Parkway in Scottsdale.

Hummel says he found out about Arizona Adventurers in 1997 at a Jewish Association of Singles Services (JASS) event.

"I was out here on business and looking for a hike during the winter holidays," he recalls. He was told about Arizona Adventurers.

Most of the participants are singles in their 20s or 30s - though many have boyfriends or girlfriends - and some are married, says Hummel.

An annual membership costs $5.
