The Temple Solel board of trustees voted Jan. 24 for Rabbi Alan Berlin to become the senior rabbi after Rabbi Maynard Bell retires June 30.

Berlin, who began at Temple Solel in 1997 as assistant rabbi and is currently the associate rabbi, signed a two-year contract.

Bell announced his retirement last November after serving as Solel's rabbi for 25 years.

Berlin, 34, will start his new position July 1. His wife, Julie Berlin, serves as the Reform congregation's cantor.

"Temple Solel has been undergoing a renaissance and I'm so excited because I really feel like this is a forward-looking step for the congregation," said Judy Schaffert, president of the congregation. "I think that Rabbi Berlin brings a lot of energy and love of the congregation and love of Judaism."

Adds Bell, "We've worked closely together for five years and I have a lot of confidence in Rabbi Berlin's ability to manage the program of the temple and also keep a calm and global view of the many different facets of temple life."

Berlin says he's excited about the appointment. "I really love the congregation (and) I love the community." he said. "I look forward to all the opportunities that lie ahead."
