Teen makes art of bugs

Thirteen-year-old Talia Sherman created bugs to make kids feel better.

A bed bug, a love bug and a big bug, to be more specific.

For her bat mitzvah project, Sherman took part in the creation of artwork for the new Phoenix Children's Hospital, which is scheduled to open this spring at Thomas Road and 20th Street.

With the assistance of her mother, artist Patsy Beatty, Sherman says she spent many weekends creating the three bugs out of a variety of materials, from styrofoam to old toys to beads - they even utilized stray Barbie shoes.

"I wanted to do something fun," says Sherman.

Beatty, who is not Jewish, says it was a great opportunity for her to share in Sherman's bat mitzvah experience.

"It made me feel very connected to her," Beatty explains.

Beatty hopes the artwork will give the children at the hospital "a moment of joy or laughter."

Sherman, an eighth-grade student at Phoenix Country Day School, had her bat mitzvah at Temple Solel on Oct. 13.

Sherman says she loves to do art and also enjoys sports, such as soccer and volleyball. She also enjoys participating in the Hadassah-associated Young Judaea youth group, where she was recently elected secretary.

Sherman is the daughter of Chuck and Shelly Sherman and she has a 4-year-old sister, Jessica.
