Forty years of Swartz art

Artwork by Arizona artist Beth Ames Swartz will be on display in "Reminders of Invisible Light: The Art of Beth Ames Swartz, 1960-2001" Feb. 9-May 12 at the Phoenix Art Museum, 1625 N. Central Ave.

The retrospective exhibit includes watercolors, mixed-media paintings and a combination of collage and expressionist painting techniques.

A 156-page book, "Reminders of Invisible Light: The Art of Beth Ames Swartz," published by Hudson Hills Press, New York, will be released in February and available at the museum.

In 2001, Swartz was awarded Arizona's Governor's Arts Award.

Admission is $7 adults, $5 seniors and full-time students, $2 children 6-17. Call 602-257-1880.

A second exhibit, "Visible Reminders," Swartz's new series of paintings, will be unveiled 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, at Vanier Galleries, 7106 E. Main St., Scottsdale. The exhibit runs through March 2.

Jews in the Southwest

"Many Faces, One Spirit," a portraiture study of the Southwest Jewish community by artist and photographer Susan Frank of Phoenix, will be on display Feb. 7-March 17 at Arizona State University's Gammage Auditorium, Mill Avenue and Apache Road in Tempe.

Frank provided the artwork for the Jewish News Community Directory 2002.

Exhibit hours are 1-4 p.m. Monday-Friday and are subject to change due to scheduled rehearsals and performances.

'Bubbe meises' tickets

Arizona Jewish Theatre Company is offering two tickets to its new musical "Bubbe Meises, Bubbe Stories" to the person who sends in the most unusual family bubbe meises (wives' tale or superstition). Include origin, if known.

The musical runs Feb. 16-March 3 at the Playhouse in the Park in Phoenix.

Singles' theater night

East Valley Jewish Singles is planning an evening at the theater for singles, ages 35-50, for the Arizona Jewish Theatre Company's production of "Bubbe Meises, Bubbe Stories" 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at Playhouse at the Park at the Viad Corporate Center, 1850 N. Central Ave., Phoenix.

Cost is $20.

Play reading

A reading of "Shedding Light" will be presented by the Arizona Jewish Theatre Company 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, at the Tri-City Jewish Community Center, 1965 E. Hermosa Drive, Tempe.

The play, by Rich Orloff, is the story of Marcie Scheinman, a middle-age Jewish woman trying to put some meaning back into her life, and Ray Foster, the black cable repairman who happens to catch Marcie wallowing in her self-pity.

A post-show discussion and refreshments will follow.



Brandeis music group

Phoenix Symphony Principal Viola Peter Rosato and ASU faculty artist Walter Cosand, pianist, will present "The Romance of the Viola" at the next Brandeis University Women's Music Study Group, 1-2:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, at Palo Cristi Church, 3535 E. Lincoln Drive, Paradise Valley.

In addition to performing, Rosato and Cosand will discuss music and their lives as professional classical musicians.

Cost is $3 for Brandeis members, $5 for nonmembers and free for members of the study group.

'Fiddler' auditions

Desert Stages Theatre is holding auditions for "Fiddler on the Roof" Feb. 3-4 at Desert Stages Theatre, 8473 E. McDonald Drive, Scottsdale.

Auditions for children, ages 7-18, will be 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3. Auditions for adults will be held 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4.

No appointment or preparation is necessary. The musical runs April 5-May 5. Marcie Berman directs.
