Obituaries

Morris Block

Rabbi Morris J. Block of Phoenix died Jan. 6, 2002. He was 80. He was born in Skopoczek, Lithuania, and moved to Arizona in 1995 from Brooklyn, N.Y. He served in the U.S. Air Corps in World War II, and was the executive director and founder of the Brooklyn School for Special Children. He was a member of the Union of Orthodox Rabbis, Jewish War Veterans and Kiwanis.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred; sons, Rabbi Zvi Block of North Hollywood, Calif., and Paul and Robert, both of Phoenix; brother, George of Del Ray Beach, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services were held in New York. Arrangements were by Boulevard Chapels. Contributions are suggested to Brooklyn School for Special Children, 376 Bay 44 St., Brooklyn, N.Y. 11214; or Phoenix Hebrew Academy, 515 E. Bethany Home Road, Phoenix 85012.



Betty Mayersohn

Betty Mayersohn, age 76, passed away January 12, 2002 in Scottsdale, Arizona. She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and moved to the Valley 32 years ago from California. She was an art consultant for many years, an activist in the movement to free Soviet Jews and made two trips to the Soviet Union in that effort. She volunteered as a reader for the blind and was active at the Hillel Jewish Student Center.

Survivors include her husband Stanley, sons Rabbi Michael (Sandy Gonzalez) Mayersohn and Harley (Patti) Mayersohn, sister Shirley Bederman, brother Larry (Bonnie) Einhorn, and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, January 14th in Scottsdale. Contributions in her memory are requested to Hillel Jewish Student Center, 1012 S. Mill Ave., Tempe, AZ 85281. Arrangements by Sinai Mortuary.



Pearl Schiller

Pearl Schiller of Phoenix died Jan. 8, 2002. She was born in Russia and moved to Arizona in 1967 from Missouri. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her daughters, Bonnie Karfeld and Sandy Turner, both of Phoenix; sister, Lorraine Klenofsky of Phoenix; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services were held at Beth El Cemetery, with Rabbi Michael Wasserman officiating. Arrangements were by Sinai Mortuary.



S. Gerald Shore

S. Gerald "Gerry" Shore of Scottsdale died Jan. 14, 2002. He was 83. He was born in New York City and moved to Arizona in 1979 from Florida. He was a women's apparel salesman and served in the United States Army in World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Claire; daughter, Barbara Glassgow of Scottsdale; son, Jon of Conifen, Colo.; and brother, Daniel Schulman of Sarasota, Fla.

Services were held at Paradise Memorial Gardens, with Rabbi Mark J. Bisman officiating. Arrangements were by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to American Diabetes Association, 8125 N. 23rd Ave., #222, Phoenix 85021-4961.
