The concept for the Sylvia Plotkin Judaica Museum's current exhibit came to director Pamela Levin after she received a book about Jewish mothers for Mother's Day.
While skimming through the collection of photographs and essays about the accomplishments, challenges and triumphs of modern Jewish mothers throughout the world, Levin realized that Arizona has its own collection of Jewish mothers who have significantly contributed to their community and families.
So in addition to planning an exhibit featuring the work of author Paula Ethel Wolfson and photographer Lloyd Wolf of "Jewish Mothers: Strength, Wisdom, Compassion" (Chronicle Books, $29.95 hardcover), the museum put out a call for nominations for Arizona's Jewish Mothers to include in the exhibit.
Twenty-nine names were submitted.
"At first we were very excited - until we realized that we actually had to pick," Levin says.
The museum had originally intended to select 10 but then widened the final list to 14.
The museum chose finalists who represent the diversity of the many women in this community, Levin says.
The remaining nominees appear on an "Aishet Chayil" (women of valor) list and were recognized at the exhibit's opening reception Jan. 13 at Temple Beth Israel (see box on page 12).
The accomplishments of the final 14 include education and community service, as well as the main qualifying factor - motherhood.
Following are photos of the Arizona Jewish mothers who will be featured at Temple Beth Israel through the course of the "Jewish Mothers: Strength, Wisdom, Compassion" exhibit, which runs until March 8.
